Project SHIELD

I love how plastidip starts off looking awful but a few coats later it looks fantastic :').

Well hopefully you'll like this fingers crossed. ;)

Made a mess under the front panel removing the tape. :( Have to tidy that up yet.

I've got more images that I will upload later of the side panel and internals. Hopefully you like?

So Plastidip is pretty awesome, the outside had four coats and the inside had three, still have half a can left out of five. The only bad thing about the stuff is it scratches very easily. I scratched the roof when I got home so sprayed over it, then did it again!

thats a nice black :)

fingerprint!!!

lol i suppose you know whose case it is then lol.

Lol! It marks easy but it's not a fingerprint in the paint, just dust and stuff from your fingers clings to it. Not to bad being in a fairly dusty warehouse.

The case is really dark, looks a bit lighter in the pics because of the flash. I'm happy with it, just needs a tidy up in a couple of areas.

ah well thats cool, i think it would be rare if its your first time using the stuff to get it perfect. i could of gone down the plasti dip route tbh i wish i did lol.

Is the alien still able to be back lit?

Yeah thats it, it's just the part were the front USB ports are that got a tiny messy and there was a part on the top of one panel, just a couple of mm that got pulled because it got stuck when I put the panel back on. I sorted that bit out though.

Lol I was thinking that myself last night, I didn't think of that during the spraying process, so honestly I'm not to sure yet. The way it works is the Alien eyes are thinner plastic so it's almost see through, if you put your finger behind it you can see it, the paint has probably covered over it to much but I'm sure I could sort something out if need be.

I was debating leaving the alien heads just to give it that bit of colour, I also thought about buying gun metal grey and doing them that colour but in the end I decided to just go black.

Remember I have more pictures later to show off the rest of the case. :)

You missed a bit.... :p

Have you looked into adding a matt laquer to it, this would stop the scratches directly on the plastidip.

but that case is looking really good, are you going to mod the alien head on front of it?

Some glowing eyes, or it lighting up around it would look awesome....

Hahaha, if you mean the top of the rear panel thats now covered, I only noticed it later on after the pics but it's all black now. :D

I'll look into that, I could do with something because it scratches way to easily, I bought another can just for tidy ups in the future if needed haha.

I'm not sure what to do about the alien head(s) yet...I'd like them red I think, I'm probably going to fill this with Asus hardware inside so a touch of red on the outside seems best.

What do you think about the side panel eyes? Should I have some sort of lighting coming through them? It wouldn't be through a fan because thats directly on the front panel so enough light wouldn't pass through. I'd have to put some LED strips or something around the eyes on the inside.

for the eyes id just get a couple of coloured 12v leds and wire them off of a molex adapter, if not you can buy them like that.

with maybe a switch at the back to turn them on and off. im still working on my circuitry but cant find a capacitance switch i like that i can make thats not too bulky due to the fact i have my hdds right behind it. would be so cool if you used a capacitance switch for the alien head and turn that into your on/off switch :D

Where could you buy them from? Do you know if you can buy USB ports/speaker, micropone ports that you can put in place of the old ones? I want to put USB 3 in the front panel but I might just cut the wires for them since I won't use them much anyway.

Infact, I wonder if there is anything else I could put there in it's place entirely, hmm. :o

The FAP King creates more than just knuckle children ?

As an avid modder this thread shall be watched very closely :D

Maplins do all the parts and you probably have 1 near you

lol thats my line! lol ;) if ya want i can get ya the codes for the parts when im in tomoz

you could break the unit up or do as im doing and making my own I/O panel, i have 2 usb 3.0 mobo headers and im gonna use them all im just waiting on cable. before i make something lol.

as for the leds you can get them at maplin or ready made on things like oCUK

Cheers for the kind response fellas. :) (I will watch the videos shortly :) and yeah if you can get me the codes that would be awesome!)

Got some more pics here, never got time to do it yesterday. If you can see any crappy bits don't worry they aren't there now. Some of it is actually fingerprints. :)

There are some rough looking parts in the pic but promise it's all good now, some just needed a bit of extra spraying, and some like the top of the side panel is just slight rips in the paint were it's not been completely dry and I was to excited and put the case back together and when removing the side panel ripped the paint a bit. :( Few dusty fingerprints too!

i dunno what colours your after but
red: CJ63T
yellow: CJ61R
green: CK49D

Wire them in parallel with a feed off a yellow cable returning to black.

and the molex adapter is: JW65V

I can do a circuit diagram for ya if you want and id run a long cable to the back splitting it with a switch at the back or something in the case

just a simple rocker switch: N84JZ
and then with that switch you can use these crimp on plugs so you aint gotta solder lol
JH81C

And of course some bell wire or something.

And what have we learned? Patients is a virtue, and pays dividends especially when painting  But that said I'm bloody impressed at this revival of what was originally a fugly case, they look hideous in silver, much nicer in a stealth black. Kudos.

if you run a singular 3v led off the 5v line, you will need to add a 56 ohm resistor to it (green blue black if I remember the colour code table correctly)

Haha aye thats true, patience is key, wasn't to pleased when I couldn't get the side panel on and when removing it the paint started pulling away! :o

Thanks, I'm glad you like it more now. :D

I will take a lot at these cables and switches now remember300, cheers for listing all the part numbers. Much appreciated! :)

I'm not to sure what to do next, I'm thinking a window needs putting in, Project SHIELD needs putting on the left and right hand side panel but I'm not sure how I want it done yet and I need to start looking at getting a custom floor put in...Didn't Tom's 760T have a custom floor with the OC3D Logo? Anybody know where he got that done or did his mate do it for him?

I think tom did it himself.

As for the logo, 1 of my crazy ideas again.... why not look at getting some glass etching fluid and then do it on the perspex so that the shield logo will be frosted compared to the rest of the perspex in side panel.

**Edit**

Or even do as above, but have the logo spilling over edge of perspects onto the case and wrap around say onto the top of case....
