Project: Hodgstars i7 build

Right then,

I got myself a second hand LAIN-LI PC70 of flea bay and it finally arrived today. I have always fancied one of these and it did not disapoint me when I unpacked it. First thing i want to do is sort this case out and do any cutting or drilling now before I build the system up only to decide i want to mod somthing else and have to strip it back down.

It was in need of a good clean, so i stripped it down and cleaned everything up. leaving the basic chassis looking like this

picture.php

apart from a few dinks and scratches it cleaned up not bad, however, the hard drive caddy (which is not present, if you,ve got one i have cash waiting) mounts to this bracket which is pop rivited in place.

picture.php

It makes access to the front fans a pain and I may have no use for it anyway! If i dont find the caddy I will make one. Either way in my mind this should be held in place with nuts and screws/bolts. So thats the 1st job.

2nd job is similar. the top panel is also rivited in place, which makes for less access and may be a pain in future mods

picture.php

so thats going to be nuts n bolts also

when these two jobs are done i will report back with photos and the plan for the next step, which is yet undicided.

Ok, that went well, the M4 screws I used to replace the rivets were just bigger than the hole left by said rivits. So I have managed to tap threads into the chassis and negate the need for nuts:)

done

and done!

Next little thing is the flap for the USB port on the front is missing and the plastic thing it mount to is broke:rolleyes:

picture.php

I wont be using these USB ports anyway as I will be fitting an icybox card reader into one of the 5.25" bays, this has 4 USB ports on it.

So I'm going to make a blanking plate for this.

made myself a blanking plate out of 2mm Aluminium

just need to decide hoe to attach it

rivits , addhesive or screws

:(Having some difficulty figureing out where i am going to mount my WC compoments ATM

got an old thermochill 120.3 HE with a home made shroud and 3 ystech 38mm fans i am hopeing to fit in the top but I cant decide which way round is best.

case upside down in picture

picture.php

this is as far back as i can fit the rad but it impinges on the 5.25 bays a bit

also got quite a big old resevoir to fit somewhere and a swiftech d5 to go in at the bottom somewhere

I would love to see some internal pics of anyone who has PC70 with similar WC components squeased in so i can get some ideas

Re attaching USB cover. If you're going for an industrial look then screws or rivets, but it looks like you've got enough space around it to weld it on from behind.

I quite like the look of it in your second picture where it isn't flush. Adds a bit of girth.

this is aluminium which requires TIG welding, which is unfortunately beyond me. I do know a man that can but if that was the look I was going for i think i would just bond it.

Got myself a second and lian-li hard drive caddy of e-bay, but it didnt quite fit.

the bit where the screws to hold it in place go was different

picture.php

so i got out the old trusty dremel.:) and hacked a bit off! then drilled a fresh hole in the centre, which i tapped with a m4 thread.

made myself a little 90 dergee bracket to go inbetween.

all sorted:):)

I've been umming and arrghing about mounting my rad in this case for a couple of days now. I want to mount it in the roof, but the rad being a bit on the large side it infriges on the 5.25" bays a bit. So i need to get the rad as far back as possible. Sort of like this

picture.php

I am also unhappy that if I mount my rad to the top panel then I can't remove the top panel without first pulling my loop apart:mad:

So i want to devise a way to mount the rad in the top of the case without using the top panel.

I think I may be able to put some extra stringers in the top somehow then bolt the rad to them.

As always suggestions welcome.

Ok I have come up with a plan to mount this rad without using the top panel. First thing I did was remove the top rails by drilling out the rivits

picture.php

These top rails are a "U" section so to aid what I plan to do a notch had to be removed from the inside with my trusty Dremel

Then i made a cross piece out of right angle aluminium.

picture.php

Now all I need are 2 long pieces of right angle aluminium to run down either side of the rad :cussing: It is at this point many profanities could be heard coming from my garage when I realised I did not have enough metal left:mad:

here is the one i made to give you the idea

Hopefully I can get to B&Q tomorrow after work to get some more, then I will finish the job and update
