Printing Grey

Morning all,

Does anybody know why all of a sudden a printer would stop printing in black and everything come out in a very very fine grey, like you can only just see the text?

Inks are all new, cleaned the printer head, the smear something and then took the inks out and cleaned the head myself and got rid of all the ink on it. Still no success...

Its a HP 5510.

It usually happens around the time HP or Epson want you to go out and buy another new printer unfortunately.

Probably true, it's a work printer but across from me is the HP 6500 and when you click print the printer does nothing, tried swapping the USB cables but still nothing.

So I'm using the 5510 now which has started with this issue and a few weeks ago my boss asked if he knew why his printer was printing in light grey which is the 5510 he has at home!

Gonna have to see if the fancy photo printing one will print documents now and tell him we need a new printer.

I'll check if it's printing in draft now but I doubt it.

Edit: No not in draft, just tried the print in black and white instead of colour option and the paper came out blank lol.

Edit: He never got his fixed so binned it. Just said he'll buy a new one (hopefully not HP).

sounds like the black cartridge is fucked to me

Now I've got a Epson Stylus Photo 1500W on the desk and it's just flashing the ink button at me. I open the top, press the ink button which is supposed to bring the cartridge up so I can change it and it just zooms about then goes back to sleep.

That worked. :)

Now I just need to know why documents say error because the ink is low not completely gone.

I have an epson at home and it took me three hours to work it out

Clear them, restart the printer and send them to the printer again.

Tried that, just keeps flashing a paper and bin icon and the ink icon. Gave up, it's unplugged out the way now, way to complicated just for office use, it's got more trays than a baker!

Boss is gonna pick up another printer later on.

Have you tried a hard reset? HP are renowned for borking their products, usually by way of a page count limit which is recorded by the printer itself. Our Epson WF3010 does this, which means after so many prints it will either drop a colour or refuse to print entirely conning you into buying a new printer (sneaky)

In our case we got a CIS (continuous ink system) with a head count reset switch.

You can however reset HP printers with a hard reset:

Remove the cartridges from the printer. After they are out, try a hard reset on the printer. Once the printer comes back on and asks for the cartridges, then go ahead and put them back in.

Follow these steps to perform a hard reset on the printer.
1. Press the Power button to turn on the product.
2. With the product turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
3. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
4. Wait at least 15 seconds.
5. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
6. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
7. If the product does not turn on by itself, press the power button to turn it on.

Just tried that but doesn't work, its printing but nothing at all coming out on sheets.

In your devices & printers (control panel) right click the printer and select properties then general tab/printing preferences the click general tab/about, what is the page count?

Check the date on the ink you have put in, if it has one (unlikely with repo carts).
Give them a shake, does it sound like they have any ink ?

Ink can dry out, seen this no end with epson, you put a new cart in but nothing is printed.

Anyway i thought the fap cave would have this in ? :D

I'll have to check the print count next week, hes taking the printers away to get them fixed hopefully so he bought another HP for £30 on Thursday.

Gave all the inks a shake and they aren't empty.

Haha not worth printing woman out...crap quality. ;)
