I may well be on to a pasting here, but forgive me im still learning

Im in the market for a new card, nothing too flashy as i only game when time permits at 1080p max.
The 270x caught my eye mainly because of the price and it seems the specs put it somewhere in gtx 760 territory, now at £169 its about £40-50 cheaper too, and seems to be spot on for what i need and inside what i have and need to spend. Also with this mantle business am i better off with amd? (im clueless honestly)
So what i am asking is, is this a decent card for the price as i know next to nothing about brands, and am i on the right lines with my thinking? i do fear my 6850 is going to give up the ghost shortly as its getting a bit noisy!!

cheers dudes!

Edit:- Lickable Clink for said card.

i would have a look at the r9 270x review on the OC3D main site. It may be a reference review so the aftermarket version should be a little better but it will tell you where that card stands.

As for mantle it is currently an unknown, battlefield 4 was supposed to have a mantle patch by the new year but i doubt that is happening now.

Mantle should help with cpu utilization and give more gpu performance (lower level optimization etc), how much will it help? we don't know yet. We will have to wait a while for a mantle ready game to be released.

Mantle based applications will make CPU thread count supersede IPC performance in terms of usefulness, application and execution. At least from what I've read and seen so far in the public domain. Though I've yet to see any new steamroller based high thread/core (8 or more) AMD APU/CPU so... (I'm rather miffed as to why not)

As for the 270x; a very sound choice. Which one you get depends on your taste, I for one am impartial to the XFX 270x for aesthetics. As the 270x is essentially a 7870 rebadged and I've owned such a card for well over a year, you'll get decent 40-60+ fps 1080p res in most games at decent settings. I've since moved over to the r9 290 series, however I know games like Anno 2070/borderlands 2/crysis 2/x com play smooth and with decent frame rates at high/highest detail settings. Considering I paid ~£250 at time of purchase, seeing it at ~£150 seems an absolute steal!

The GTX 760 could be good potential purchase if you consider smooth, fluid gameplay & animation over raw performance and posses one Asus VG248QE. Then you can go ahead and enjoy nVidia's GSYNC tech (with upgrade pack). I can't vouch or speak for this tech, but again from what I've read on it (since I was considering the 780's as a purchase) it works best at fps around ~40-<60 range on that particular monitor. Seems odd considering the refresh rate of the monitor is about double that.

Thanks for the advice fellas, I'm going to go with the 270x. The question now is, do I go for the powercolor devil, or the MSI hawk lol.
I guess it won't matter too much as I have the bug and I can feel a whole new build coming later in the year Haha!

Out of your choice, I'd go for the PowerColour 270X Devil.

Mainly just for the aesthetics.

Any particular reason why? My brand knowledge for GPUs is properly shonky! The only reason I chose the MSI and Powercolor is because they have the highest standard clock speeds.

After skimming over a bunch of forums, the tri-X seems to be the best all rounder, massive overclocks, quiet operation and lowest temperatures.
And it actually looks decent which is surprising because sapphire

Not saying any of the other cards wouldn't do a great job, it just seems the tri-X is the dogs danglies.
I'm biased because i really like the looks, but from an unbiased opinion i'd say the devil and the tri-X are on par for the best.

Thanks for the sapphire heads up.. it looks a little cracker that! From the reviews I've read its the quietest and coolest, the overclocks are on par with the devil, but you're right, its the best looking..
Sapphire it is I'm going for.

Thanks again guys! This is exactly why I've registered I've ended up with something I'd not really considered.
