Tired of seeing Threadripper builds? (haha)
Tired of every one boasting of uber hardware?
So bored you could just sit in the corner and fap?

Well you've come to the wrong place, sorry.

Oh yeah, what am I up to. Well, a few days ago I procured a 2005 Alienware case. This one to be exact.

fZp1G14.jpg

It was covered in rubs, gouges, scratches and smelled like BO. Seriously, the bloke who delivered it freaking STUNK. The entire case just stunk of armpits. After heaving for a while and giving it a good clean down with some window cleaner (with vinegar) I took a look over it. Three cracks, none visible thankfully. I will get to that later.

So this is what it should look like.

Only it didn't because it looked like ass and stunk like armpit.

I began working on it yesterday and spent most of the day colour sanding, cutting, buffing and polishing. Here are the fruits of some of my labour.

Side panel and top. Look at the one in the background (not done at that time) for comparison.

This took about an hour. My hands are still numb from two days of it.

Wet sand 3000, T-cut metallic and then Plastx for that super shine. I will be using some kind of wax/polish on it next. You can literally see your face in it.

OK, so before I even started to think of what hardware to put in this thing I bought this.

Quickly followed by these.

So that I can inject the cracks and stop them spreading. Right now they are very small fatigue cracks (from where some dildo tried to pull the side panel off without removing the screws :cussing:

The case needs minor repairs but will be solid once I am done. OK, so literally just as I was sanding the last panel for cutting etc a pair of bike wheels I have had on Ebay for over three months finally sold at my asking price. I was happy.

I started digging and thinking, man, it's amazing how quickly you forget technology once you move on. In the end I settled for an Asus A7V8X/LAN/GOLD.

It has RAM and a CPU but I don't know what either are yet. Not a problem, both are literally tuppence. So obviously I needed a graphics card. The last AGP card I had was a 9200 Pro. Then I moved onto PCIE. However, I need to be very careful because the games I am intending to run spaz out on more modern hardware. These games include, but are not limited to.

Sega PC Daytona USA
Sega PC Sega Rally Championship
Midtown Madness 1&2
Motocross Madness 1&2
Half Life, HL OP, BS
Gunman Chronicles

And so on. I have all of my PC games going back to 1996. Literally hundreds.

So I had a think and remembered that the last time I played those games was on my 3DLabs Oxygen 32mb X4 AGP. So I started the hunt, and found this, a Wildcat 64mb VP560.

It is brand Harry Spankers and cost me £15. It seems 3Dlabs have had a clearout, and one company in particular on Ebay have hundreds of them. This is good, because it has brought the price down to practically bugger all. I won't need to replace the caps, either. I've got the drivers too, because 3Dlabs still have them on their site.

OK, so storage. £3.99 oh yes.

DVDRom £5

Round IDE cables 99p each

And I could not resist this. £6 though !

Cooling. Why yes, it will be water cooled with a proper loop :D

Couple of things. I will be running Windows 2000 with DX8.1 (easily the best way to enjoy old games !) I have a 400w PSU that needs a new 80mm fan. I will most likely braid that..

I checked the GPU before I bought it. Apparently it can run 1080p lol. Hilarious :D and runs digital into modern panels :D

A Refreshing blast from the past, Very interesting..Just a thought but maybe a thread for peeps on a tight budget who want to build Budget system using either latest technology or a combination of latest/Used. "Budget Build Corner" or something. :)

Some of it is budget. There will be braiding and water cooling though. I found a beautiful old block last night. Hoping I can make it fit :D

I started out today's fun by hunting down some versions of Direct X for Windows 2000. Because I worked in a computer shop I was lucky enough to be given Windows 2000 by a Microsoft rep a couple of months before it launched. I still have it, which is a good thing because it was still the best version of Windows IMO. XP was just 2000 with a posh front end. Any way, it was when they introduced Direct X for Windows 2000 that every one pretty much threw a party, because you didn't have to be at the mercy of a crappy OS that BSOD every ten minutes (Windows Multiple Errors).

First version is Direct X 7. It goes up to 9.0c but my GPU maxes out at 8.1. Not that I care, most of what I am aiming to run is DX5 lol.

I have deliberately ordered a GPU with a slower core and RAMDAC too. If you over cook it most of the games do not work very well, if at all. Daytona USA for example. You get to the straight and it goes at about 300 FPS. Get to the turns it drops. So it's completely unplayable. I am hoping the CPU is not too fast, if it is I will see about under clocking it.

We went from the P166MMX to the Tbird in about four years. Tbird are all 1ghz or more, IIRC. So I am kinda hoping it's a slower Duron. Maybe 800mhz max, but we will see. I can always swap it out if I have to :)

I've spoken to a chum on another forum (he's big into his old stuff also) and he reckons this particular Asus board is bomb proof. Said he wouldn't even bother testing the caps let alone replacing them because they did not suffer the ailments of the Nforce 2 boards.

Said the board should talk too lol. "No graphics card detected" "RAM fault" and so on.

I also would not recommend building something like this as a budget rig. It was cheap, don't get me wrong, but I could have bought a Core 2 Duo cheaper.

I am aiming to target a specific bunch of my game collection that suffer from stupid fast hardware so that I can play them properly :) I might even have to drop it to something like a Pentium 2 or Pentium 3 tbh.

Ah that browny-gold coloured board brings back memories...not good ones mind. Used to build all our own business PCs to order for sale. You didn't know the spec in advance so you ended up having to bang out ten of them over a weekend and then work out why at least one of them was giving you grief. I quite like the peaceful life now where you can just buy them off-the-shelf (for customers - I water-cool my own) and they generally don't go wrong. Happy days!

I got rid of a lot of the old-school stuff I had obsessively stored but I'll have a dig through and drop you an email with a list of any stuff that might be of help. I think I may have a CPU block of that era. Fairly sure I've got an AMD heatsink with a 60mm focused flow Delta on it....if you want old school air-raid alarm rather than water cooled peace and quiet! ;-)

haha no quiet will do mate :) I had a look at the PSU last night. It's a Zoostrom (so Ebuyer) 300w. The rear fan is dead, so I got this for £1.59 from China :D

Going back to the block... This is it here. Ignore that it's pretty much black, I have buffing compound. Instead focus on the four holes that pass straight through...

HlGjBZQ.jpg

So then I did some looking online and found this.

Ccy0Kon.gif

And guess what? we have a match. It will bolt straight to the board. Couple of problems.

1. The G 1/4 holes have a 45 deg slope before they are flat. This was for old barbs. What they would do is wrap something around them that I believe to be plumber's tape, then screw them in. So O-rings are out.

2. This means that unless the acrylic is reversible you will be making me a new acrylic top.

Cool huh? :D

Yep, its PTFE tape to seal (with any luck) the threads. Exactly the same stuff plumbers use. Its white too...just to wreck your colour scheme.

You can't even flip the top panel like you did on the last one. I could probably make one using the old as a pattern. Conveniently have G1/4 tap from when i couldnt resist playing with things I probably already knew wouldn't work!

Yeah you can't flip it I just tried. New top would cost £4 or so (black) Clear is more and tbh? I think I would prefer it black. Just shot you an email.

So the inner chassis and panels got a bath (and myself at the same time haha)

Fw6VdUo.jpg

I also liberated it of the stupid mass hard drive cage.

GleatLw.jpg

I managed to sweep up the shavings this time and haven't got them in my foot

I removed the cages so I can fit this.

180mm Vegas Quad. Paid a fortune for it and this is kinda a junkyard build so I am trying to use up all of the decent stuff I have lying around (it's a lot !).

Great work so far dude! Always wondered how much Alienware internal layouts differed from normal cases. Never heard of those Vegas fans though, they any good?

Alienware are Chieftec. Well, they were Chieftec on all of the predator and predator 2 cases. So they've the same as a Chieftec Dragon inside. The Predator 2 was different (a new design not just a "wrap around" like this one but still made by Chieftec.

The fan is 180mm and is made by Enermax. It does this.

OK so I think the CPU is a AMD Athlon XP 2400+. Unless any of you guys know better? I would imagine the 2400 part gives it away but it's been many years since I saw one.

p1gf9BZ.jpg

Also, get the original Aria sticker haha.

The ram is 512mb. More than enough, I only needed 128. I can't totally test it ATM because I have no GPU. However, when powered on it beeps once. Good news? I know PCs can fire without a GPU you just can't see it. If it was going mental I would be far more worried tbh. Unfortunately it seems some one got a bit frisky with the thermal compound and covered the entire CPU. It's just taken me 20 minutes to clean it lol.

Ever since being given this block forever ago I have wondered why it had a funny channel machined out of the bottom.

iWTm8vy.jpg

Then I looked at the CPU socket.

dnOYM4t.jpg

And it all made perfect sense...

zmWGBL2.jpg

Ah those bring back memories. Back when CPUs had foam dots in each corner.
If you're arms will take any more of it, you could polish up that block so you have shiny copper (mainly the top surface) and then we could cut the acrylic so the sides are parallel to the o-ring. Might need to shorten two of the screws but it could look good.

I am going to polish the bottom (CPU contact) myself and then use my dremel "mop" (if you can call it that) to clean up the inside. Yeah for sure that thing will gleam dude when I am done :) I do need a cardboard box to do it in though, as the Dremel will no doubt spatter anything within 50ft with compound. That's one of the only reasons it's not done yet :D
