Is the 3080 launch availability non-existent?

Hey all,

Having been using a 1070 since they came out - great card - and considering I built a new 3900X based system in November last year, I've really been looking forward to the 30 series. However, it seems like "availability" has been some sort of joke / bait and switch from what I can tell.

As the nerd that I am, I've been sat on NV's own shop page since just before 2pm UK time - when these cards were supposed to be available from - yet at no point did the 3080 ever show as being available to buy. There was the "Notify me" button - clicked and emails address submitted - but in the space of 5 seconds, between refreshes, it went from "Notify me" to "Out of stock" - at no point could I actually buy, nor was I notified.

Checking out both Scan and Overclockers UK at the same time, both sites were largely out of action (unresponsive) for the first half hour - I never even got a look in. They did finally start responding, but none of the "Pre order" (yup, no visible stock and expected dates a week plus away) buttons actually work at the moment.

I've been tinkering with PC's for, well, far too long to mention now, and I've NEVER had such issues just ordering some hardware on or close to launch like this. I got my 1070 at launch for £380 no problem.

I'm well aware I'm ranting a bit here, but this really is a total mess. Where did all the stock go? If people HAVE managed to confirm an order - I'm happy for you - but I wonder HOW, as not once has there been a functional option for me to buy (or even pre-order) on Nvidia's own shop, Scan or Overclockers UK.

To add insult to injury, when the list of 3080's does come up, the price seems to have gone up £50 every half-hour for certain AIB models! With zero option to actually place an order at any point.

Have I just been unlucky here to not once be presented with an option to actually order? Am I now going to fall foul of further epic price-gouging because of this as I wait for more stock?

It sounds rough with scarce availability, but worth still trying I think, friend bagged a Ventus pre-order for tomorrow from OCUK a few mins ago. But they had to go through 90 mins of refreshing for that, after failing to get an FE in the seconds they were up.

Turing had a similarly papery launch, scarcer iirc, but theres a lot more hype this time.

It's all gone down exactly as predicted mate.

It's a pre emptive paper launch against the consoles and AMD.

One of my mates (who sold me his 2080Ti) got one. However, he had 5 people in his household all pressing F5, it was a basic Gigabyte card and it cost him £750.

As for the gouging?

Gougeroo. Only, it's not a gouge this was the plan all along.

NO ONE and I repeat, NO ONE got a FE. They lasted about 20 seconds.

If I think about it, I'm not really *that* surprised how things have gone down. I was just feeling a little bit more optimistic than usual as, for the first time, I was actually keen to get a Founder's Edition directly from NV, which I foolishly thought would give me my best chance - but at no point was there a "Buy" option for me.

I WILL NOT pay the rip-off prices the price gougers are demanding, the card loses all it's value to me if I know I'm being screwed. Here's hoping things calm down.

I was checking, and I actually got my 1070 in the same week the card launched, yet there was ample stock and the price was great. I suspect very limited stock is the cause of the problems here. Perhaps they simply cannot produce the cards in decent volume yet?

Edit: Both Scan and Overclocker's web sites keep going down for me...zero opportunity to do anything still. NV's Shop give no indication of future Founder's Edition stock either - it was basically never available to order from them in my location.

Over six forums this morning I can tell you NO ONE got a FE. Not one single person.

They only needed one, and it was job done.

Try and bag a 2080ti if you can. However, I can see prices rising again sharply after this fiasco.

Looking at Scan at the moment, prices are ranging from £719 to £880.

Aria only have a few but £649 to £830

Don't know about OCUK but can imagine they are the usual overpriced stuff as usual wouldn't suprise me if they are not £900 and above.

Most of the price hikes though are more than likely whilst the stock is "Low" that is why if I wanted one of them I would be waiting a few weeks.

That is what I will do for the 3090 if I decide to go for one of them.

I just checked out Nvidia's own forums - lots of rage there. It does indeed look like no one was actually able to grab a Founder's Edition card - total fake (aka Paper) launch.

I'll stick with the 1070 for now. I don't need to upgrade, I just wanted to. I can survive playing at lower than optimal settings just fine... I only moved from a 2600K in November last year after all lol.

Hopefully things will settle and calm down a bit...perhaps AMD will get NV back on the right track eh? :)

As an aside, I just noticed my signature is OLD, but I don't want to change it as that was a epic build for me, done Nine years ago now...and all the parts are still in regular use, just not all in the same PC any more lol.

Thanks @Damien c, I didn't actually check Aria, but won't use them any more for good reasons.

For me £649 was a *good* price, much more than that not so much. I tend to set my price / value target and stick to it, so hopefully FE cards will actually be truly available to buy at some point.

There were some Asus TUF and Gigabyte cards in stock for launch in Finland, Founders edition just went immediately out of stock.

Personally I back ordered EVGA XC3 ULTRA, let's see if that ever arrives. :D

At the price of the FE to buy and what it costs to make? I can't see it.

$155 cooler for a start. Then the die, at around $40 and the GDDR6X and then the rest?

It was a pipe dream from the beginning.

Any one who actually trusted Nvidia? this is what you get for it. Maybe now you can all understand why I dislike them so much.

Heh, I know right. I have found it quite therapeutic reading others sharing my frustration. Sorta feel over it now, but still hope to upgrade at some point, though it may very well be an AMD GPU this time if they deliver.

This morning I was going to purchase a 3080 from OCUK, Not for me I'm helping a workmate upgrade his PC and he wants to upgrade from a 980 Ti to a 3080, Anyway the order was about to go through as I was very early when it suddenly went up £50, I cancelled it, Phoned him up and he said "those greedy bar stewards" that's the clean version of what he said, He's now waiting for AMD :D

Tell him there there, Gibbo has said there will be loads in October before Big Navi comes out. In the mean while Nvidia have issued an apology.

It is amusing how quickly the perception of Nvidia has gone from them being the good guys this time, with fair pricing (only cos of the 20 series though) to being very much the bad guys due to not actually having any stock.

I genuinely hope prices settle when (if?) stock actually hits acceptable levels and AMD hit the market with LOADS of stock to give people even more options.

On a side note, people's reactions / memes regarding this launch are making me feel better - quite an entertaining day really lol.
