There are usually a lot of "Likes" for witty/funny comments so it'll make some members appear more helpful when really all they've done is crack a few jokes.
It depends at least to some extent on the community. For example, on OCN (where
"likes" are called "rep") I have found that rep gets handed out much more sparingly and
really only for constructive contributions. I'm sure there are exceptions, but as a general
rule of thumb you only get rep on OCN if you post something properly good (and even
then it's not at all a given).
On LTT on the other hand, likes get handed out like candy.
Of course, whether a forum belongs into OCN's corner or LTT's can be tricky to judge
for a newcomer to the community though, which is something to keep in mind.
As for my personal POV: What I appreciate about a "like/rep/thumbs up" functionality
is that I can show appreciation for a member's contribution without having to bump the
thread.
So, when perusing the forums and stumbling upon an older build log or tutorial, I can still
give the author(s) some positive feedback without needing to necro the thread. For that
I think it's pretty useful. But I don't think it should be a prerequisite for helping people. I help
someone because I want to help them, not for getting likes, and I crack jokes (well, try to,
at least) to entertain, not for like-farming.
EDIT:
Whatever you guys decide, just make sure Alpenwasser gets 12 of them. He writes regular helpful essays in the liquid cooling forum.
Just as I was writing up this essay (well, OK, it's not that long)
Also: thanks!

what one can.
EDIT 2:
Also, a "like" button would allow to concur with somebody's opinion in an advice
thread without having to post something like "^this" or similar. Somebody gives good
advice, you can show your agreement by giving it a thumbs up.
