Please SuB can we have a like button?

There are usually a lot of "Likes" for witty/funny comments so it'll make some members appear more helpful when really all they've done is crack a few jokes.

It depends at least to some extent on the community. For example, on OCN (where
"likes" are called "rep") I have found that rep gets handed out much more sparingly and
really only for constructive contributions. I'm sure there are exceptions, but as a general
rule of thumb you only get rep on OCN if you post something properly good (and even
then it's not at all a given).

On LTT on the other hand, likes get handed out like candy.

Of course, whether a forum belongs into OCN's corner or LTT's can be tricky to judge
for a newcomer to the community though, which is something to keep in mind.

As for my personal POV: What I appreciate about a "like/rep/thumbs up" functionality
is that I can show appreciation for a member's contribution without having to bump the
thread.

So, when perusing the forums and stumbling upon an older build log or tutorial, I can still
give the author(s) some positive feedback without needing to necro the thread. For that
I think it's pretty useful. But I don't think it should be a prerequisite for helping people. I help
someone because I want to help them, not for getting likes, and I crack jokes (well, try to,
at least) to entertain, not for like-farming.

EDIT:
Whatever you guys decide, just make sure Alpenwasser gets 12 of them. He writes regular helpful essays in the liquid cooling forum.

Just as I was writing up this essay (well, OK, it's not that long)

Also: thanks! :) Sadly I don't get nearly as much time these days as I'd like to, but one does
what one can.

EDIT 2:
Also, a "like" button would allow to concur with somebody's opinion in an advice
thread without having to post something like "^this" or similar. Somebody gives good
advice, you can show your agreement by giving it a thumbs up.

Like everything, I think there will be pros and cons.

It's nice to get recognition and appreciation for helping others, although in my experience, you often get this in a reply to your post if you've helped, which is a lot nicer than a simple 'like', and this may become a substitute for a more substantial thank you message.

It could help decide whose advice will be most reliable, but this may not always turn out to be true and could be counter productive; a newcomer could give better advice in a certain circumstance than an experienced member, and vice versa, and if somebody bases their decision of who to listen to on this, that could be quite bad.

OC3D is a relatively small community, and all of the helpful, kind, and regular posters here are well know around the forum anyway.

Some people may fix the amount of likes of their posts with secondary accounts, so maybe liking posts would need to be restricted to the rank of 'Member' and above for example.

It would be a shame for rep to become something people heavily focus on obtaining, rather than being friendly and useful for the sake of the community.

Those are just the thoughts I could quickly come up with.

Seriously though: A rep system can be a useful addition, but it does have its potential
drawbacks and pitfalls of which people need to be aware. Personally, I would say I'm
for it, all things considered, but I don't consider it to be the solution to all problems. ;)

A lot of pros and cons to this. All my points i was going to bring up have already been said.

IMO as long as it is not spammed and heavily relied on then it would be a good idea. If it becomes heavily relied on then people with lower likes or such have their helpful advice taken with a grain of salt compared to someone with far more- even if they are wrong...

Instead of having a like or rep button why not just have a Most Helpful Post and another for Most Helpful User(to give credit to more than one person if need be). Both would be one per thread and that user would then get a +1 to their rep. Seems a logical way of doing things and would prevent spammers.

likes would be good, as we have the number of posts, but people can post stuff and it may not be that useful... but if we have a like button, it can go to a persons like counter, so we know how much of what they post is good, and useful and people agree with it.

If this goes ahead, it has to be a animated version of a thumb like Tom's "DING!"

Yeah that's not happening. It's hard enough telling everyone with animated avatars to do one, this compounded with animated banners would turn the site into a very unprofessional looking browser killer.

Get back in your box Shaun

I remember the previous rep points, they were good. A like button does allow us to show our appreciation for a post rather than "+1" everywhere.

You might have to get the hobnobs out then Tom.

In all seriousness though, I don't think a 'like' button would really improve much but I also wouldn't mind it if it did exist.
Oh SuB, what about a YouTube tags button (like IMG and QUOTE)? ;)

Xda has a thanks button frees up posts like "thanks" amd gives a meter under you avatar and as said would show the credible users amd useful posters.

Till the 34th post i can see more people in favor of the "button" thing that against it!!! And guys you all are calling a "like button" but can be anything like plus (+) button and a minus (-) button for example, it can be both!!! ;)

P.s.- You guys notice that i added a button more don´t you!? hihihihih :p

We used to have a +1 rep or -1rep before the forum got updated, then we had a like button when the forum was updated. This was before it got reverted due to the attacks on the site which left us without any type of like button.

Personally i'm not fussed either way, I always find that if you stick around you get to know who is trust worthy and knows what they are on about anyway. On a forum like this the people who don't know what they are on about or who aren't trustworthy get called out anyway, so I don't think a like button is needed.
As I said though, i'm not fussed wither way. :)

I agree with this, I'm not saying a like button is bad but most of the regulars will know who is trustworthy and if a newcomer is active enough and gives good advice, he/she will not go unnoticed!
