I am building a PC for Christmas, this will be my first time but my dad is worried.

He keeps suggesting for me to get a Dell XPS 420 for Christmas because it's "ready built" and "has a warrenty"

I've been planning my list for almost 4 months now and I can't just say i'll get a Dell.

You can only really update the RAM and GPU with a Dell right?

Just get someone to talk to him from the forums if you can. Also, point out that you save money on the computer, and many parts HAVE got warrantys. For instance, corsair PSU's. And PSU's going boom is the only way you can really KILL your PC. If ram dies, just buy some more. Not too much.

Also, show him lots of things on how it is good, and maybe try to find someone who works with PCs in your area to talk to him. Thats what i did. And btw, im on first build this christmas too! We should talk to each other thru the process. Could be fun.

Good Luck!

Aye could be :)

So most parts I buy come with warrenty's? That'll shut him up for 5 minutes

Yes, and if the parts dont come with em..... you know what to do (PSSST... LIE)

Yeah.. What I could do is just ask a friend to build it for me or something, so if something goes wrong he can fix it :p

just tell him to shut up and stop being silly, and start getting parts ;) cant say no then. they just dont want to see or think your wasting your money, so get it right and they'll be eternally happy that youve learned something new :)

depends on his age. I am 15 and my parents complain but ultimatley let me do my stuff.

Some parents will completely restrict you, and if you disobey, you end up with blazing rows and confiscation. You could always beat up your dad and get the stuff back, but that's the worst decision you will EVER make. My bro and my dad just aren't..... friends any more.

I built my first one @ 15 - Just read up your stuff - start with easy stuff now such as installing more ram or a GFX card. Then maybe swap a case - thats pretty much all your skills done. Just follow the motherboard/cpu/case manual and kerrrpow its done. As for warranties all my stuff is still going strong but like everything comes with it (i made sure)

Aye i'm 15 aswell (16 on new years eve) He can't make my change my mind soo lol.. He is like "I can't help you son i'm busy cooking dinner". He doesn't want me to build it mainly as when I got my Arctic Cooler 64 pro I asked for his help and he bent the pins on the CPU so he keeps bringing that up and i'm like "Dad the Q6600 doesn't use pins" lol

point out that bending the fins is the easiest way to kill a part of your PC. Putting in the cpu is probably the most dangerous bit, though shorting out your mobo could be a problem. And as the q6600 doesnt use pins, its a pretty safe install.

Out of interest, how'd you bend pins while installing a cpu cooler? surely there were safe and sound in their slots.

When I pulled the stock cooler off, the CPU came with it =/ yeah it actually came out of its socket stuck to the cooler. What great thermal paste was that lol..

Well, thats good to know, something to do slowly then.

BTW brooks, you don't have any tft monitors you want to get rid of lying about do you?

I am looking for a bargain on any size black tft, hopefully for under 35 quid.

We'll send the boys round to sort him out ;).

But really. Every part you buy new (online) has at very least a 7 day warranty. Nearly all good manufs do a few years and the 1st year is normaly covered by the retailer/etailer.

Built my first @13 and my dad was so mad and worried that I bought the stuff without telling him. Now he's proud :]

I started young too, at first dad kept checking the fuses and so on.

Now I have so many PCs and so many home bult rigs that he doesn't care.

Plus I know what I am doing.

As said before parts brought from the internet have warranties. For example my corsair ram has a life time warranty. Thats like forever! :D

PSUs usually have 1-3 years. But in that time you have brought yourself an upgrade. Nothing to worry about mate!

Get your dad to view this page.. that will sort him out! ;)
