Get your dad to view this page.. that will sort him out! ;)

Totally agree with Tox tbh...

I know that some of the less web savvy generations out there question the reliability of information on forums. BUT...take it from me...the peeps on here will give you as much or as little help as you ask for, and the help will be BANG ON.

So...get ya bits and build away...and good luck!!

:wavey:

Thanks for all the replies guys, I see that most of you did start young (very young for you Vader :p) I'll probably show him this thread later or just tell him that all the parts get warrentys.

Looking at a parents pov, I`d be thinking:

Dell = he`ll use the thing.. and use it.. if it goes bang, I get Dell on the phone. (and they are pretty good in the main)

Custom build = my son will learn off the experience of tinkering around inside these things, which in all honesty is worth 10x the money the Dell costs, considering his future etc.

There are downsides to building ur own of course, like having to w8 a week or so with no pc cos there`s a return issue. BUT this is a learning curve. U either do something better next time, or avoid something. (and u start building up spare kit LOL)

IT industry is lacking people prepared to open a case and look inside and not just pick up a phone and complain. There`s a fair bit of money in it too, if u have the sheet of paper to go with it.

Last thing the country needs is another young person studying sociology to get a degree. Bumps the figures up tho.

Yeah seeing as I want to do Computer Maintence when I go to college this would be a huge learning curve for me..

the IT business aint exactly high paid, but i imagine it could be fun, unless it ruined computers for you. Hence i am going for Law

Dunno where you get that from, IT can be very highly paid if you get the right job

Jobs in IT can vary imensely.

Tbh tho, for an entry level job that u take for 1 to 5 years as a step up to something else. 19k or so to mess about with computers all day aint exactly the hardest physical work in the world.

U can imagine urself stood in the pub with a m8 or 2 on a friday after work - they`re busting their arses for 20-25k, u play with computers for 19k - and plan to move on. Know where I`d rather be at that point in time, I`ve had tough skin on my hands from work.

Where u choose to go from the entry position is down to the individual.

yeah, but, if i get into law as i hope, then i got a gaurantee after 5 years of pupilage, to be earning 50k...

Then heading on up, though, to be fair, that means thinking and writing alllll day long, but seeing as i wake at 6 30 atm, and get home at 6 30, thats something ill be used to.

Getting into Law is tougher than getting into IT. Just to warn you. Loads of my mates who went to Uni with me have had to try real hard to get a job in law, and that's from one of the best Law schools in the country

Building your own is the only option, I cant remember how old I was when I built my first pc (14 or 15 I think) but I just did it together with a mate (browney) and it was easy.

really? like what?

I seen figures of 15-40k for most jobs, i.e software writing, maintenance, website desing

um you could get 15k for a single website if you're doing it for the right people...

that should come under designer, not technician tbh, website maintenance yes, but not design...
