OC3D Throwback Thursday

Good article, please keep them coming Tom!

I always wanted a Q6600 but whenever I had the opportunity I always upgraded my GPU instead so for many years my rig had a P4 3.2GHz in it, back from the day of owning a 6600GT up to a HD4870 and then I squeezed in a second hand Core 2 Duo, 1.88GHz if I remember right?

You know whats missing these days, a white motherboard, remember the one Sapphire made for Crossfire, although it wasn't so great compared to the Asus boards in terms of performance and overclock-ability.

Edit: Do you think there is any chance you could throw together an old rig using these old bits and see what performance they can delivery in todays games, maybe a quick RushKit video?

Edit: Ooo oo! and the Asus 6800 with the blue LED's, always wanted one of them too. :P

It's good to see some of the older stuff, not much has changed since Sandybridge and things have been a bit stagnant. But form the Pentium 4 and the x38, P35 and up to the 775 chipset there was quite a lot of changes with motherboards, CPUs going to dual core to quad core, RAM going from DDR1 to DDR2 and DDR3.

Motherboard design was certainly a lot different a few years back, with crazy heatsink designs, with weird RAM slot and PCI/E slot colours.
Graphics cards that looked like VHS tapes, and all crazy kinds of things that you don't really get today where the same design is used over and over and only what is underneath in the hardware is changed.

Oh man Ive just caused my hardware purchases of old kit on the bay to skyrocket in price >.<

You've got to build a rig with the stuff Tom, just give us a quick look round to admire it. :)

My brother in law still has his Asus P5B Deluxe, Core 2 Duo 1.88GHz, Artic Freezer 7 Pro, Asus 4850...might make an offer! ;)

CEX is a good place to get old CPUs and GPUs from.

They also give you 12 months warranty on everything, so unlike Ebay you can get a replacement or get something of the same value if it breaks.

awsome idea. bringing back heaps of memories of older systems i had years ago .making remember the first big rig i owned with the msi k9a2 platnium with a amd athlon x2 6000+ and 2 ati 3870,s in crossfire .and the funny part is that all butt the 3870,s are still going strong .i gave my uncle the system years ago when his pc died .even funnier is the 3870,s only died on him 6 months ago . ebay away hahaha

Looks nice but I honestly don't remember the 6900 series.
It was the first high end 'card I had a go on that left an impression on me, it made me want a piece of the pc action. So I went out and bought a dell inspiron:banghead:. The rig itself was a nightmare. it had some sort of core 2 quad, a 6990, a no name psu and it was in some ancient packard bell OEM case. It made so much noise.

I remember fitting one of these coolers to my 6600...not long after the card died lol, what I do wrong?!

Edit: I'm so tempted to buy the Asus 6800 but it's from America for a little over £30, or this as I remember seeing these beats too with the mermaid they had from their tech demo/benchmark.

i rember those coolers wow flashback hahaha .still got 1 of my older gpu,s out the back with that same cooler on it

I can't remember the original cooler but for some reason thought I'd buy one of them, stuck it on which was a nightmare (me being noob) and the little blue heatsinks around the chips, it lasted like a week and just died. I think thats when I took the 6600 back to the local shop, re-fitted the original cooler and said it was broke and got a new one lol.
