nVidia Ion

when i read the thread title, I said: "WTF nvdia already done another card?!?"

this little dude looks great, and works great, i need one!

and lol, you can game on it

i wonder if it could work with bateries? couldn't find on the review :( (that's because probably it dont )

its just a great htpc, i thougth it would be weaker (like most of the new mobile hardware, but its pretty good.)

also i didnt like the atom it used on one of the versions, and i just hate when they do more than one...

It's not a retail product, it's not for sale, it's just a demo of the platform. Nvidia would like that integrators use their chipset with the Atom and the dual core Atom instead of the Intel chipset. Which does make sense, 1080p on an Atom would be nice.

This means new nettops that would be a little better then the ones we have now. But Nvidia doesn't say how much it costs to pare up their 9400m with the Atom compared to what the Intel chipset + cpu combo costs. Intel has an act of offering big discounts on combos.

For now it's just a box that says to the big manufacturers out there (Asus, Acer, HP, Toshiba, Sony, Lenovo) that there is an alternative to the Intel chipset for the Atom.

and that chipset can decode full hd whilst using 20% of an atoms power. i dont think there are any others anywhere near this, let alone the same SFF.

as far as I have read Intel are saying a big no no to this, they do not want the atom to get away from them(maybe they should put a decent chipset with it then)as it stands at the moment Nvidia are flogging a dead horse. Will dig out the link where I read that

Stupid intel monopoly on the Atom and similar platforms telling their OEMs exactly what to do with the CPU... I really hope AMD's next reincarnation of their mobility platform is going to be succesful, heard some promising news about it.

That's not accurate. Intel doesn't block any manufacturer from using the Ion platform. The problem is that nVidia is asking a lot more money then Intel does.

Intel sells the chipset bundled with the processor, and it does it at a very low price. nVidia had mounted a marketing attack on Intel, they even have one of their top guys praising the AMD Neo, the VIA Nano, but if you read between the lines, nVidia really wants the Atom. ( Link: http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/680/1050680/nvidia-ceo-disses-intel-chipsets )

This sounds good at first, but when you take in consideration the actual market climate:

For the year, Intel gained market share, going from a 77.1 percent hold in 2007 to 80.4 percent in 2008. Via also went up 0.8 to 1.1 percent. That increase in market share from both companies had to come at the expense of AMD, which fell from 22.1 percent to 18.5 percent.

Intel’s gain is largely attributed to its Atom processor, which powers nearly every netbook on the market today.
( Source: http://www.tomshardware.com/news/intel-amd-via-cpu-sales,6956.html )

So, this means that nVidia tells you one thing, but wants a different thing. They want the Atom, since it's the next big thing, and it's been for almost half a year now. The funny thing is that they don't like that Intel is selling us their chipset so cheap, a price too low to make their own 9400m market competitive. It's a better chipset, but it's really expensive to use.

I would pay for the difference, but Average Joe will just buy the cheaper nettop, because it has the same Atom processor, the same amount of memory and the same HDD space. That's the only thing Average Joe know about nettops. He only wants email and word, he doesn't care about 1080p full HD movies on an 8" screen.

Everyone wants to get on the winning wagon, and will employ every trick in the book, Intel and nVidia (and the other manufacturers) are alike. Don't be fooled into thinking they'll do anything for you, they just want your money.

Tell me if I'm wrong. I dare you! :)

What would really be nice out of this is if nV started producing hardcore overclockable fast as hell all out gaming processors....
