Nokia tests ultra-high speed mobile broadband

how can they do faster wireless than wired, what the hell's going on, surely wire's are more efficient?!

and at this rate, everyone will be fried from the radeation, from mobile's, from wifi, from bluetooth etc....

Why arent we, the hardwire broadband users, running at these speeds first? Wtf does a phone need something so fast for?

I was involved in a community project that involved setting up roughly 5 thousand homes on wimax it was the only viable solution available to us at the time to get that community networked, and the speeds are great.

The telephone system in this country for the most part is cat 3 running to your house the exchange systems run on a ring system so if your on the wrong end your connection and speeds are bad. Then the Cable system is not much better running coax in to the house from the exchange. At best technologies have been developed to make the most of our archaic network which when first setup was state of the art but now is lagging behind other parts of the world.

I was at a BT conference roughly a year and a half ago where BT announced a lot of investment in wifi technology as almost a saviour as the lines simply cannot cope with much more speeds/increase in traffic. Although they are working on rewiring areas it literally is a case of starting a fresh and the total cost of that is immense.

The costs of mobile internet I am sure will come down as they start to compete against each other I think it will be great to have my mobile phone as a modem/wifi access point specially at those speeds :D.

As said above, it would be brilliant taking your laptop and phone and having access to high speed tinterweb.

Understand realitys post about cat 3 cables. I currently live in a place where I know there is fibre coming in with plenty of spare connections available (only drama is they belong to the government)

My house is on crappy BT cable installed years ago, and although they had the option to lay fibre the same time as the other fibre was being laid they chose not to cos of cost.

I max at 2MBps :(

I already have mobile broadband (connect at 3.6mbps, normally get 1-2mbps) and it is useful when travelling and such. As it is with both BT and Virgin refusing to give me a phoneline this was the only option I had.

Well yea, but i still find it sad that a phone has faster service then my PC and it dosent even need it.

Just because you dont need it doesnt mean its not needed.

I think the way to look at it is when these speeds become available through the wireless networks it will not be isolated for use on just mobile phones. Providing they are secure and stable then it is an aternative to the wired systems you will easily be able to network this connection and share it amongst your home pc and do away with the wired connection or have it as a backup.
