how are they compaired to a dedicated bluray player?

The PS3 is a brilliant Blu-Ray player compared to normal dedicated Blu-Ray players. The only problem I know of would be that you have to use the PS3 controller if you don't have the PS3 remote.

so rather than spending say 170 on a sony bluray player, get a PS3 and a remote

then you have a console and a ps3

how can you connect a ps3 to a AV recever

Exactly, apparently there is no difference between a BluRay player and the PS3 (unless you're looking at the top range models). I do however see a difference and it isn't my TV. During watching BluRay movies I get many little specks which are so annoying. The only way I can get rid of them is by sorting out the contrast and such. I have my TV set perfect for movies but there is still some specks all over the screen. My dad and bro have the same problem with their PS3 on their TV's and their TV's are a lot better than mine :)... I haven't seen this with a BluRay player though!

I heard that the PS3 downscales Blu-Ray films to 480p if the output from the PS3 is set to 720p.

If you set it to output at 1080i/p then you can watch it at a higher resolution. I heard that the problem occurs because there is no 720p channel on the Blu-ray disc. but then again how do dedicated Blu-Ray players play at 720p?

i dident no bluray players scaled down to 720p i no they upscale tho.

but i imagine they use differnt processers/engines

and ive just thought arnt ps3's 720p/1080i

The PS3 doesn't downscale to 480p if set to 720p. My HDTV tells me the res its being output at, blurays are 720p from the PS3. PS3 and Xbox 360 both support 1080p. That being said, I find I haven't played a game on the PS3 for about a year, and only use it for bluray. The Xbox controllers are more comfortable and the PS3 lacks a decent Forza 3 substitute until GT5 decides to get released.

If I hadn't been forced to buy a new Xbox a couple of years back due to the hardware pixies causing an RROD, I would be a little more interested. As it is, with the use of some careful tin foil placement and an oven, I have two 360s. Still nice design.

All PS3 games are 720p, movies can go up to 1080p, and that 720p to 480p was fixed a while ago. Agree with the xbox controllers, don't like the ps3 triggers.
