hey guyz

i'm thinkin of building a new rig in feb/march (or whenever the Q9450 comes out)

so this is my list thus far:

Mobo:

Abit IP-35 Pro £105.00

http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.aspx?sku=335649

CPU:

Intel Core 2 Quad-Core Q6600 G0 SLACR £152.62

graphics card:

512MB XFX 8800GT Alpha Dog XXX £210.00

http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.aspx?sku=342384

RAM:

OCZ DDR2 2GB Kit (2x1GB) 1150MHz/PC2-9200 (OCZ2FX11502GK) Flex XLC Dual Channel Kit £119.00

http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.aspx?sku=330040

thermal paste:

Arctic Cooling MX-2 Thermal Compound £4.69

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=TH-001-AR

PSU:

PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750 £93.99

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-001-PP

HDD Allocation:

Group 1 (internal):

1. Programs + Windows Drive - 250gb

2. Movies + Games Drive - 500gb RAID 0

3. 500gb RAID 0 with above drive

4. 250gb RAID 1 of #1

5. 500gb RAID 1 of #2

6. 500gb RAID 1 of #3

4x Seagate ST3500320AS 500GB Hard Drive SATA II 7200rpm *32MB Cache* - OEM @ £69.89 each

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/130826

2x Seagate 250GB Hard Drive SATAII 7200RPM 16MB Cache - OEM @ £53.28 each

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/113435

Group 2 (external):

1x Western Digital 1000GB MYBOOK2 STUDIO EDIT external drive -USB 2.0 FIWI 400 & 800 E SATA IN @ £192.85 each

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/137326

1x Linkstation Pro 320GB SATA Based Network Storage Centre @ £133.78 each

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/118557

The HDDs are there for both redudancy and backup.

Group 1 is the internal speed + redudancy group, then Group 2 is for High Speed backup (esata - WD) and also for worldwide and internal network access to certain data (mainly for my father and LAN gaming purposes (buffalo linkstation))

The Mobo and CPU are in a state of flux (aka the CPU will be the Q9450 not the Q6600, and mobo will be whatever is best for that CPU + RAM).

What i'm NOT sure about is watercooling, sleeving and possible lapping (scared crapless about that).

so any ideas, critiques and whatever else feel free to mention here.

1.25tb will be used by me, 1.25gb will be used by the system (redudancy raid 1), then a further 1tb external to actually backup my system (lets just say i'm slightly paranoid).

then the NAS which will be used by my father and whatever LAN party i decide to hold at mine after i wire up the house for ethernet)

bloomin heck, my 160GB HDD does me, and my 300GB external haha..

Erm.. Do you REALLY need all that storage?

The rest of the system looks ace :) However if you can, cut back on a fair few of those HDD's and go for the Q9450 and a nice X38 board. And I dont know, maybe try waiting abit, see what happend in the GFX card market, i think you'd be best off going for an 8800GTS G92.

but surely the GT is stronger than the GTS in this particular case?

basically grfx card has to last me a year.

HDDs, Mobo, cpu and ram have to last me about 2-3.

i might go for 4gb ram and 64bit OS depending on driver availability

Meh id say go with GT, theres hardly no difference, both run all the games available today and crysis on very high is no more playable on a 8800GTS than a 8800GT.

Both cards will of coarse last you a year dont expect to be on max settings on games in a years time though.

well ive got 1tb atm total, and thats after deleting alot of movies.......esp as i'm downloading HD movies now......so i need alot of room to expand

Looks good personally would wait for the 780i series nforce chipsets and go with one of those!

Which I will be no doubt around the same time as you state!

Buy a dedicated RAID card if you want that RAID to work properly, onboard RAID is pretty horrible and if you have to swap MB you lose it :(

XFX Revo is a good buy, can get 5 drives on the 5-port version, if you want more you're going to need something expensive like an adaptec rocketRAID card.

I think that 8800GT is overpriced, ATI 3870 is worth a look i've seen them at only £130
