New Comp For Ionicle

right, well the day of reckoning has finally arrived, and ionicles broken his computer beyond my skills of repair. he wants to get another 754 board and cpu, although i advised for him to get a good socket a board and cpu as in my experiance they are more reliable, durable and idiot proof. please bear in mind before you comment that the board he gets needs to be within a very tight budget, be hard to damage physically and through software OCing and be either compatable/ backwards compatable to ddr 3200. it also needs agp 8x for that beefed up radeon he bought off dave.

just to let you know, the pc broke when he installed a new hs. for some reason best known to himself he completely removed the board and cpu when he did it, and he "scraped" the thermal paste off the cpu in his words. bearing in mind hes extremely heavy handed my geusse is that hes put too much pressure on the cpu die or killed the board through static. mind you, he also left his comp on in a lightening storm and since then the powers been all over the place. id really appreciate any cheap mobo and cpu deals anyone can come up with and any good methods for testing mother boards and cpus.

at the moment im advising his guardians to simply allow him the money for a cheap pc chips board and a sempron 2200 to see if he can actually keep a pc working for a long time. also, bear in mind the fact that he never uses the pc fro games that require much power.

thanks for any help you offer

Right well I'd say to fist get a DFI LANPARTY UT 754 board. If he gets that and another PSU (and doesn't scew it up), he can then test to see if the CPU works ok.

Its worth a try.

try www.overclockers.co.uk for one of them

Also a Hyper R PSU is on there - one of those would be good to get - value and not too bad :)

yeah i think we all would recomend the dfi lanparty UT nf3 250gb motherboard, or even he could go for MSI K8M neoplatium which is quiet a good board goodluck anyway

edit: if all else fails get a good socket A set up hapening there very good semprons seem to be the new XP's

ah right lan partys are out of the question im afraid, as his grand parents arnt going to shell out 65 quid for a new board, thats why im thinking of him getting a cheap board and socket a cpu.

i should mention now that hes not goiong to OC no matter what he thinks in the future, as hes agreed to have the bios and clock generator locked when he gets a new system. above all it needs to be cheap and hard to damage as he seems to have a talant for destroying expensive electronics

ok well as far as socket A go the brands which you can look at MSI, asus, gigabyte, epox and abit.....

if hes not overclocking then all of the are great :)

nothing as far as i know, some of the designs ara little outlandish looking but fine apart from that.

oh and he aint gonna oc, so i think ill get his guardians to get him a pc chips. hey, they cant OC but they run for ages and can take a pick axe from my experiance with them. besides as has been mentioned, he has an agp so it wont affect his performance too badly, and he doent evebn play demanding games so performance on 3d tests isnt an issue

dont think so lim, deepfried talks sense and i fail to see the idea that there is a smart side to ionicle.

well deepfried i am selling my celly and gigabyte mobo and wd be willing to cut him a nice deal since he is in a bit of bother. talk to me via PM.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/ABIT_Socket_A.html -- Abit Nf7-S Version.2 ( third last from the bottom ) . Not the NF7-S2G board.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/AMD_Athlon_XP__Mobile_.html -- The second one. Great Value for money , and with a free multi and a decent cooler , these babies run nice right upto about 2.4 ghz or so. Its really not so hard and with a decent user-edited bios , that board outshines most of the DFI NF2 boards , and the soundstorm is an added bonus.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Hiper.html -- PSU , the second one from last . That psu has nice rails and should do good ( japanese ocers swear by that psu btw )

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Thermalright_120.html -- Thermalright SI97 should work just fine .

Memory --- See if you can get hold of some Twinmos Speed Premium Series. they have winbond chips in them and u should be able to run tight timings on it.
