Netbook

I'm after a netbook for uni - looking to spend £150 to £250 max :)

I really like the look of the Dell Mini 9n, especially as there is a £199 option. However, this only comes with a 4GB SSD, and there is no option to get a larger HDD without adding on £100 =/

Any other recommendations?

I've had an Asus EEE for over a year now with a Ubuntu OS and I've been nothing but impressed. In spite of only having a 4gb hdd I've never managed to fill it, so I'd say if you plan to use linux I'd say the 4gb isn't really a restraint. One of my mates has the Advent derivative of an MSI Wind and it's a really nice piece of kit, bigger hdd too.

I've just been having a look around and there are so many available, which looks like good news as the specs are much better than my EEE which I paid £200 for.

On the whole whatever you get it's a great purchase for uni, probably the most useful thing I've bought. Tied with a louder alarm clock :p

Why not just grab a 8 or 16GB SD card if you need extra storage? Or a few 8GBs as you can get them for £12

Aye, suppose so.

That's my new favourite I think :)

That one there in the link is an excellent netbook.

Installed XP on one, and it's amazing quick. Could even handle Windows 7 IMHO. You won't be disapointed.

Edit:

£179.97 inc VAT, with 512MB RAM onboad, you could just add 1GB more..

Edit 2: http://www.acerdirect.co.uk/Grade_A...20GB_-_White_A1-LU.S040A.074/version.asp?PID=

£150 inc vat.. bargain!

It's going to be a present, so I think they'd prefer buying a new one for the money extra as opposed to getting one with a damaged box ;)

And I've got no cash at the moment to buy the extra 512MB of RAM so if I go for the extra 512MB I'm still within budget and I get everything I want without having to pay for it myself :)

I've been drawn toward the Acer Aspire One's - 1GB, 120GB, Atom CPU, XP, for £170 odd :)

I got one of these. Apart from being awesome all round its got one major drawback, which is making me to think of switching to asus or Samsung. Battery life, it sucks. 2hours at best i manage.

Id say try to get one with a SSD - you would get more battery life due to less moving parts in the whole machine - would be faster too

I didn't realise that the Acer Aspire One's battery life was so bad. I thought around 3.5-5hr would be expected. That being said at £150-175, they are priced very well!

You can't go wrong with the EEE PC's. It also comes down to how much you value features that make the machine more convenient to use or more portable. Personally I'd stretch the budget closer to the £300 mark and get yourself a Samsung NC10. I've had one of these since November and really appreciate it's six cell battery, which has seen as much as eight hours of use. It's keyboard is also close to the size of a conventional keyboard so it doesn't require much adjustment when using a desktop keyboard and then a netbook or vice versa. There's also aftermarket 9 cells available and it's possible to swap out the HDD with an SSD if you wish to. It also comes with a large 160GB HDD hard disk drive and Windows XP Home. It is on the upper end of the netbook price range though, but it's certainly one to consider :)

As it's a present that isn't really an option :)

Looks like I could pick a 6 cell battery for the A150 for £35. Would that be worth it?

If there's a six cell optional battery, then I think for a smidge under £200, I'd say that that's a pretty good proposition :)

Just a word on battery useage, I find on mine that facebook and forum browsing sucks the battery fairly hard. Other websites bbc, newsbiscuit etc seem kinder on battery life, as I guess they should with thier lack of flashing adds etc.

Using open office and typing, my EEE doesn't go much below half battery after a 3 hour train ride of using it.

Is that 2 hours of just web browsing?

Everything really, browsing net, or watching a film and the battery wont last two. Writing up an essay will hold 2 hours just about.

Why i didnt get and after market battery for it, is because it makes it look so chunky and bulky (basically the sticking out part i didnt find appealing), and i am sort of perfectionist, so its sort of put me off a lot

I will be looking to change it to one of the Samsungs or Asuses once i get some money to play with.
