My Lan Aint Workin :@

Gday guys, to night i decided to set up a lan for me and my bro to play cs, iv set up lan heaps of times just never on windows xp, what i have done so far is connect the cable lol, put in the ip address and subnet mask, i have installed cs as i got to make a new lan i create then my bro loads it up on the other computer it loads and everything recognises iv created a lan game when he clicks on it to join it comes up with " Could not connect to game server: reason:lan servers are restricted to local clients (class c)"???? what is going on and then when my brother creates a game and i go to click refresh to see his server cs kicks him out of the game totally back to the xp screen?? :nono: whats wrong with my lan and what have i dont rong?? any help

Might be saying you need to have IP numbers starting 192.168.*.*

That's the class C private IP range. You are using the correct type of cables as well aren't you? (I've used straight-through when I've needed crossover before- it stopped it working!)

yeh, iv got them starting at 192,169 * *, yeh im using correct cables becuase its worked before 100%:s! do ya know what the problem is then?

Change them to 192.168.*.*

That could be the problem- 192.169 is public.

Other than that, how have you got it setup? You using a router, a switch or just a crossover cable?

You mean category 5 cable most likely, but you have to check how it's wired.

If you look at the ends, where the clear plastic is, are the colours in the same order at both ends, or not?

ok just did the 192.168 didnt work:s, nah there not in the same order!

OK, I'm stumped for now. I'll ask when I get to class (I'm learning this in college at the moment).

You did set up the workgroup correctly, didn't you? (probably won't make much difference but it's worth a try).

ohh ok thanks so much, umm yeh there both in the same workgroup BUT when i click on the other to see his files, this thing comes up saying user name password, and a picture of keys on the top:s??

in any network always use ping to see if it pings the other computer

Now in both computers goto start > run > type "cmd"

then in both computers type "ipconfig" look at the details u get on both computers

try to ping the ip adress u get on the other computer or vice versa.

e.g C:\ping 192.168.0.1 or whichever the ip no u get on the end machine.

You will get results if it makes the connection , or it will say time out if it cant connect.

Check this and let us know. If it does connect and u cant connect to local lan games then few games require IPX / SPX / Netbios protocol other then TCP / IP so it might be that.

ahh cheers mate, i got it workin i called up a cousin who knows his computers, told me i have wrong ping instead of having 192 i had 196 stupid misread what danii had read sorry:s thanks guys cheers
