Can anyone help me with an audio issue I'm having on my asus maximus hero vii. First off I'm a beginner. This is my first pc build so if I come off looking stupid...o well. Built this system and everything is running great besides the small fact I have no audio. Won't play throu b the monitor, headsets, earbuds....nothing. can any one help me with this please. Any advice is much appreciated!

Have you installed the audio drivers ?
Have you tried the front and rear inputs ?( For the front you have to connect the front IO cable to the HD audio on the motherboard.
How are you connecting the monitor you want sound through ? ( It needs to be HDMI otherwise you'll need to connect the 3.5 green jack to the monitor and motherboard )

Need more information please, but here a basic checklist for you to work off;

  1. Check drivers are installed and updated - Click here to get latest driver
  2. Check cables are in correct ports. - In green socket around back of motherboard. Also check that you had cable plugged into the AAFP socket on motherboard for your case headphone jack, and finally check that you have plugged into the speaker port on monitor not microphone (if it has one built in)
  3. Make sure that you have the audio settings correct in bios (refer to page 3-37 of the motherboard manual for more information on the settings)

Please list system specs for us so as we can get a better idea of what you are working with, eg what make and model the monitor is, whether you got an i5 4690k an i7 4770k or i7 4790k etc, what graphics cards, memory etc, whether you running windows 7, windows 8.1, linux.

The more information we have the better.

Thanks guys. I'm gonna start troubleshooting further with the advice given. I'm running an i5 4690k. Windows 7. Dell ultra sharp HD monitor. xfx r7800 ddr5. I greatly appreciate all the input and will reply back asap. Thanks again.

Have you checked the playback devices to see which one is set as the default? To do this reight click on the speaker icon on the right of the taskbar and select "playback devices". The one with a green tick on it is the current default. You may find that the gpu or spdif has taken priority over speakers.

a screen shot of your device manager would help a bit..
also as you have an ati card. it could very well be using the hd audio of the hdmi port. and the above poster "kei" tells you how to change that.
