Logitech X-540 vs. X-530

Hey guys, I'm going to buy my new speakers soon. I have narrowed it down to the Logitech x-530s or the Logitech x-540s.

Which speaker system do you guys think I should buy and why? I can get the 530s for about $48 and the 540s for about $70. It seems the only difference is the look of the speakers and the wired remote. The 540 also has a matrix mode. Do I need a matrix mode? I have integrated 8 channel HD audio so I'm not sure if have a matrix mode would be of any use to me. The 540 does have an LCD monitor clamp for the center speaker, but I have a good position to put it on my desk. Which do you suggest I buy and why?

THanks.

Speaker extension cables?:p

I was in the same position and bought the 540s. Basically I preferred the looks of the 530s but there were just a couple of things that swung it for the 540s. I liked the monitor clamp and I use it but obviously you don't have to. I liked the wired remote as well, I figured that it would create less interference than having the controls in the speaker. I also thought that they just looked better built. Like I said I went for the 540s and I've never once regretted it as they are awesome.

If you've got any questions about them just ask. And the matrix thing is actually pretty cool for some things, I don't use it much though.

You mean speaker wire Vader?

Umm well its not speaker wire. I think RCA extenders? Oh well I can find that easily in Frya. THe question is 530s or 540s?

I would get the 540's because they are the newer version of the 530's and the newer versions are usually better. They probably fixed some flaws in the 530's.

Ok now my question is...

What is the matrix mode? What does it do, and will I need it?

I have a 7.1 HD integrated sound

Matrix mode basically just takes a 2 channel source and makes it into surround. It's sort of a novelty tbh but i'd rather have it than not have it.

First where did you find some 530s for 48 bucks?

Secondly heres my opinion on the 530s (sorry ive never seen or heard the 540s)

The bass is droney period. You start putting some low mids (between the 62-125hz range) through the sub and its like a gian buffalo fart seriously. I believe the satelites lack something. I havent pin pointed it yet but idk. Just missing something. I can never get the right balance of mids and highs through the satelites to make it sound right. And this is after spending like about an hour of playing with eq settings on my friends computer. If your not an audiophile like me who just HAS to have perfect sound for 48 bucks those are great. Im sure the 540s (like mentioned above) are probably better and for 70 bucks thats not bad at all. Dont the 540s have the wireless back speakers?

No the 540s don't have the wireless back speakers, and no I'm not an audiophile.

Doddsy, you mentioned that it takes a 2 channel input and makes it 5 channel. What does that mean? Does that mean that it's good for sound cards that can only support stero or 2.1 speakers? Or does it mean it's good for programs and music that are only in 2.1?

No it means it takes a stereo image and clones the rear speakers and center with the 2 signals. As in (this is what im guessing cause usualy what happens) what you hear in the front 2 speakers you will hear in the other 3.

Ok thanks to both of you for the clarification. I can pickup the 540s for $68 after a rebate. I'm leaning toward the 540s..

Just ordered some 540s for $78- $10 MiR = $68

:D

Any suggestions on how to mount these beauties?

(Is techonweb.com a good website? The ratings seem good...)

Sweet!

And yeah as far as I can tell they take, for example, a piece of music that comes in stereo and fade parts and delay parts to make the music sound like it's 5.1 (or whatever).

As for mounting it depends on whever they're going. The feet can swivel so you can put them on walls. And the rear speaker cables are pretty long.

On my 230s, I saw at the bottom of the base there's that hole for the screw/mount. Do I just put a screw in my wall and attack the speaker, or is there a better way to do it? Thanks.

btw, how long are the rear wires?

Yeah that's pretty much it. The feet rotate so that they're behind the speaker and you just hook them onto screws.

Not sure exactly, they look about 3 metres.
