Linus Tech Tips Forum Begging for Money !!!

i honestly don't care at all. i can't tell if he actually needs the money, i don't know what he has to pay for, but afaik he has employees on the payroll and youtube doesn't pay that well either.
don't like it, don't pay for it. don't use the linus forums anyways.

I think this is a bad idea for any forum by doing something like that only ends up with a class system you end up with the elite class and lower class
its not a good idea at all the point of forums is so that everyone adds to the forum not just money but helping people with good info or just a good chat about a new bit of kit

oh look who is talking, a newbie. look at my rank! 2 elite 4 u!
just kidding of course.

There *must* be a valid reason, they've always been very vocal about never pay-walling the youtube stuff, it's weird that they've resorted to donations for the forum...

The thing here I guess is that it IS entirely optional and you don't get anything BUT the badge, if elitism forms in their community because of that then they'll have to address it.

You have to also think that, people probably asked for this the same way loads of people asked for T-Shirts, mugs and stuff here...

Lots of tech savvy subscribers usually means about 50% of people have adblock on which means they are technically free-loading.

i personally tell people to avoid using adbock, it denies so many people their rightful income.

I have also noticed a lot of sites making moves against/ to discourage adblocking. eg Roosterteeth.com forces a 30-40 second blackscreen on their videos unless you disable adblock on their site.

i am fine with ads in the header of the site or on the sides, but i can't deal with pop ups or the 30s ads of youtube, especially because i am absolutely not the target group. i much rather donate a few bucks to a person who deserves the money and deny them the 0.5 cents they get for the ad.

Well, personally I do not mind donating a tenner if I enjoy the forum and channel, especially if it goes towards improving both of them.
The fact that he needs more than he makes ATM, well, not sure about that. Then again the damn Sony camera did cost him sh*t loads (even tho most of the time the videos were looking worse than a DSLR), then comes the server rack, renting the "office" and feeding the family + 3 team members.
But yeah, I would not mind, it is probably more of a honor thing.

I will openly admit i use adblock, but that's because i spend like 90% of my day on the net, and I don't need animated clicky distractions.

I have to disabled it on here as I've always (always) got it in a tab incase I'm needed. However I make a point of opening a different window with it off at least once a day to make sure my 'visit' was counted. Being as I'm technically staff, I shouldn't be viewing them that much anyway as it's just view/click whoring. (which is why i have adblock in the first place).

As for you tube... well, I make sure I watch some videos on my phone for channels i actively *support* and content that i think deserves the money. I'd rather the choice was up to me than a 1 size fits all.

As you are a web master I would have thought it is in your best interest to have adblock off to make sure the ads are appearing correctly on the sites that you maintain..

Also a little of topic but what is up with the "Gigabyte nVidia GTX780 SLI vs GTX Titan SLI Comparison" image on the front page slideshow ? Hasn't been appearing for me for the last day or two !

As I said, it's off once a day to check, no sense it being on all day while I idle.

I'll look into the front page images.

Edit: done should be back now.
