Leakage to Earth

We are getting a lot of trips recently and according to Dad it is down to the Earth Leakage.

A trip of the earth breaker is because of to many devices leaking current to earth. Having lots of powersupplies each giving 1mA will sooner of later trip the breaker.

Now, does anyone know a good solution for this other than turning devices off?

Cheers. ;)

ooh, we've been getting a lot of trips recently, maybe we've got the same thing.. I'd deffinately like to hear a solution (Y)

Ok I'm not an electrician or anything but perhaps it similar to my ps3 "ground loop problem".

Almost like the opposite, my ps3 is keeping the ground "in" whereas yours keeps letting it out.

Perhaps there is too many routes to ground? Maybe just the actual psu at fault (probably not cause i know you two buy quality)

Maybe its just the electrics in an old house (iirc tox you do live in an older house?) being under strain, but im guessing you have probably had them done up

Well, I got Dad to bring home a leakage tester which allows us to see the leakage of each device.

Basically, each device has a little leakage to earth whatever you do it will give off something. When the device is turned on it will send a little spike to earth which is what usually trips the system.

A random trip might be because of a fridge or a freezer turning on. But my main question is what is the best way to tackle this without turning everything off? :)

But Sam, you sare correct in saying ja dodgy PSU will cause more leakage to earth. Including older PSUs. PS3 hold in ground? That is interesting, what is the result of that?

Thanks again!

Basically i cannot use the normal AV out (scart component etc.) as i get all hozinontal lines which get worse when sound is present, also a lovely buzzing noise. I am also just out of my year warranty.

But then again my HDMI is fine and thats all i use and all that is worth it

Apparently it can be fixed by those in america or the likes by cutting off the earth prong on the plug or by removing the aerial on your tv as this is going to be looping the ground or something.

Are your electrics modern in the house?

I don't think you can say modern by I wouldn't say old. ;)

About 70s was the last fix up for the old part of the house and around 2004-05 for the new part of the house.

Could say it is a hybrid. :p

Tox - Unfortunately apart from splitting the load across several ringmains, your stuck =S

Mrapoc - The 3 pin plug on a PS3 ends up causing a ground loop when connected to the TV by scart. This means if you interrupt the PS3's ground in some way, there is no second route to earth, so there is no current running through the scart lead. *mini-disclaimer: don't do this* However, HDMI doesn't have a ground wire, so there is no ground loop =D

I knew there was some scope for other than in theatre when looking for the source of the mains hum from the schools amp =P
