Lapping

I've been looking into lapping my heatsink and my processor. 6C off temps sounds pretty sweet. However, I'm confused about how you can sand one side of your cpu while keeping the sensitive side safe. Anyone got any tips and tricks for cpu lapping?

Most people place the pnp cap on the side of the cpu with the "pins" and place it on a desk or something.

When I dont my amd I used the foam that it was shipped in. a couple did bend but just used a nife to push them back into alignment.

If youve got pins use some soft foam (the craft foam paper stuff works well), if no pins I used a fat wad of blue-tac a few times

The upside of the blue-tac is that I could put a J-Cloth on the glass, pour some brasso on it and stick the chuck of a drill into the bluetac. Instant mirror shine

Wait, put blue tack on the contacts? I'm far too paranoid for that >< I read somewhere that someone taped some paper over the top. Think I might try that.

On another note, one way I have read is that people generally rotate 90 degrees, but I have also seen 45. Which technique do you guys use?

I would stick with 90. Your arm will be aching, plus its less to remember.

Rgr! Now I just need to get some wet and dry, which is good because at the moment I am practising spraypainting (possibly cases). This way I can use it for sanding down the paint afterwards

(cause of the metal shards)

You will use about 1 sheet of lower grade stuff, then going up grades you will eventually use less.

Thats what happened with me.

theres a fair amount of metal to get through till you see coppper/

What? How can you use a desk to protect the back of the CPU while lapping it?
