Dude he's right. That case has been completely raped.
I didn't post anything before because I was of the opinion if you haven't got anything nice to say ......
But honestly it looks horrific.
I'm all for Steam Punk builds and builds that follow a proper theme of being rusty and old. All that's happened here though is some one has taken a gorgeous limited edition case and buggered it analy.
If something has been done badly then it does not come under the rat rod look, it just looks terrible.
I think you are being very unfair dude. Building pcs is an expensive game there are different budgets and every person has a different ability, some cut a window in a panel while some fab a case from scratch. This guys has built a pc that he is happy with and probably poured his heart into making it the way it is which makes it invaluable to him. So let him be. I have seen plenty of builds on here that I have thought were crap and said nothing. Because its rude and unnecessary. I'm not 100% happy with my build. Far from it actually but I sweated over it so I love it regardless of its level of completion. It's something I have been noticing has been getting more common is people being critical or mean. If everyone just takes it easy and respects other people workmanship wether good or bad. Things will go nicely

If you're referring to the case mod I did with your scathing reply there? at least the work was carried out properly and done properly. If you don't like how it looks? fine, I didn't f***ing do it for you.
Wow, i mean could you not tell us just to repaint us and give us a better technique? Are you so stuck up that all you can do is condescend the project. The reason we put the project up is so that this community can help us fix it/make it better. I'm more dissapointed to be honest that tom couldnt help us, with a tip or two. Still I am glad that one or two of you in the comments above have some maturity.
Well if you think the community can help you fix this and make it better then listen to what the community is saying.
I said the case has been raped. It wasn't personal and I wasn't being nasty (and neither was Tom) it's just how it is. You've taken one of the most exclusive cases for years and painted it badly.
If I wanted to condescend you I would have made personal comments. I didn't, I'm just saying what I see.
I'm sure that when you look at the paint job you can see it's washy and patchy. That's because it just hasn't been done properly. No offence, but if you're going to paint a £250 case then at least you could have done some research on how to do it properly. I've always been an advocate for rattle can painting because as long as you do your research then you CAN get a decent finish out of it, especially with the paints today. In short, though, I would suggest this.
Firstly it's not a race. Good painting takes time, heck, weeks.
Step 1. Sanding. Make sure you create a key for the paint to adhere to. Otherwise you'll be chipping it and peeling it as soon as you breathe on it. Start with something like P600 and make your way to P1000. Then use "pre paint" to clean the surface so that you don't have any contaminates.
Prime the case, spraying 8-10 inches away from it in a sweeping motion, left to right or up and down but DON'T change it. Don't be tempted to go in different directions or be lazy about doing it right.
Sand with P1000 to remove any overspray (grainy).
Prime again. Sand again (P1000 wet sand).
After you've applied three good even coats of primer sand again with P1000.
Clean it and use a "pre paint"
Base coat.
Depending on which sort of paint you choose this will vary. If you're using flat or eggshell type finish then this will be your last coat. You want three even coats MINIMUM in total. Again, sand each coat between coats (use the drying times on your specific paint as a guide) and then apply your final coat.
If you are using something like a metallic paint? you need to be good at it. You can't sand metallic paints between coats as they carry pigments and or flakes/pearls that will be damaged if you sand on them. This is fixed though by applying clear coat and I will get to that now.
What most of your finish will come down to is how much time and money you spend. There is no 'cheap' way to paint something properly.
If you have used something like a metallic paint and would like it to have a good lustre/shine then you can use clear coat AKA laquer. With paints like metallics and pearls this is how you get your desired finish. To do this you need to follow the logic of -
Hit the surface with clear coat or laquer. Keep your panels FLAT as this will help prevent runs. Put on enough clear just so that it almost runs. Let it harden. Sand with P1000. Repeat three times. What you are doing here is basically encapsulating your metallic/pearl finish with clear coat that will level the surface out. When you are happy with your very last coat then hit it with P1000, P2000 and then a buffer.
As I mentioned there is no cheap way to paint anything. Doing it right requires a buttload of money in paint and prep materials. What I would do with that case is strip it back and get it powdercoated.

As a person who knows next to nothing about painting metal let alone having an eagle eye to spot imperfections unless it is staring me in the face I think that the mod itself has made the case look a lot nicer. The chosen red colour is something I really like and congrats on adding the window in too. The changes have been a change for the better.
Sometimes I think this forum should be renamed to OCD3![]()
I was not aware you had done a case mod. My apologies, I respect you normally and I was just giving an example from what I've seen on the internet (it was posted on kitguru's fb a while back and I can't actually find the link but think cit case with some awful plexiglass, brush painting and after market neon shiz from Halfords and you're nearly there). Also it wasn't meant to come across as scathing as you've interpreted, I guess thats just the way I write after all these years of being a moderator on a gmod server. Maybe you can explain as to what you'd to to it?
To Greg, in my opinion you might want to sand it down and do the colour again. I'd also get braided cables for the psu as you have a window
Big applaus to SparkleDJackson. I couldnt agree more.
Some of the biggest complainants havent even done a single mod themselves and have no clue what it takes. Doing thing right takes practice, practice and practice. If you wanna be really good then you must see your own faults and bite the sour apple.
We have all been newbeginners at one time so no need to talk down to others or being rude!!
This reminds me why i had a break from this forum.

Tom and I weren't being rude. We were just saying what we saw.
Harsh? yeah maybe, but tell me, if you did a job badly and every one said "wow good work" would you strive for anything else?
Both Tom and I have years of experience AND both know our painting. I've gone out of my way to help out here.. This isn't just an every day build using boring old parts, this rig is all top end equipment.
I totally agree with you alien. Dont tell me somethings good especially if a lot of money is going into it. But can you maybe see that the bluntness was kinda offputting?
I guess it depends what sort of a person you are.
Me? I spent years designing and coding emulated machines for thousands of people and whilst their nasty comments upset me when I look at the work I produced at the start and the work I produced near the end? chalk and cheese.
There are companies out there that can paint the case perfectly. It's well worth spending the money on given the magnitude of the parts being used here. This isn't a £50 budget PC which is probably why Tom and I decided to comment on it.
