Intel insurance 3960 & 3930

Hi,

I did have a look around to see if anybody has brought this up already but didn't see anything.

I read an article about Intel offer insurance on certain i7 cpu's. To insure either a 3960 or 3930 it look to be around £28, Scan has it offered as preorder on their site. It appears it covers you for killing your cpu due to overclocking and they will replace it (once only). Has anyone else seen other sites offering this insurance and how much or when it will be available?

I have not heard of anyone buying it but I will be getting it for my 2700K at the end of this month.

I want to see if I can get my cpu to boot and get a CPUZ Validation at 5.3ghz - 6.0ghz, have one already at 5.2ghz.

I believe though that you have to wait 30 days after buying it before you can claim so some people may be without a cpu if they buy it, and kill there cpu within the 30 day period.

Not sure if you can buy it for the replacement cpu though or if it's like a 1 time only buy.

I think i remember seeing a few guys saying they were getting it in the OC3D new post about it tho dont hold me to that.

It is a nice cover option as 2nd hand owners (ebay or other means) could get stuck with a dead chip shortly after buying it if the previous owner decided to run it into the ground and leave it on its last legs then sell it on without forewarning to the new owner.

If they had a cover option for my I7 970 i would 100% buy the cover just so i could see what the best i could get out of it without having the risk of a several hundred £ key chain after it or it degrading to the point of being pointless to overclock (if i ended up degrading it to badly i would probably just kill it off for a replacement tbh if the cover option was there.)

Be interested to see if Intel ask any questions when you claim or if it really is just a matter of sending the dead cpu and getting a shiny new replacement. I'm think you are correct Damien c that it is a one off thing, which makes sense otherwise you would just endlessly abuse the cpu until death and swap it for another one.

Yep its a 1 off thing but nothing is stopping you from taking the insurance out again on the new chip.

I know it's a 1 off thing but, I am not sure if the shop will allow you to buy it again on the replacement cpu, or if it's only allowed to be bought and used once regardless off which cpu you buy.

Im 100% sure i read you can buy it for any cpu that they cover regardless of age or if its a replacement or not.

It's listed in the T & C's that the insurance can only be purchased on the initial chip, not on any replacements issued under the policy.

Apparently you're also covered for the full three years of what would normally be the warranty term, though you cannot claim under the insurance within the first month of registering.

Funny intel always seem to replace the cpu's iv killed under warranty lol
