But the noise your rig makes is above "ambient" noise, the values he is giving are "delta" values which is a better representation of how loud your rig is in comparison to natural noise levels.

I haven't got a noise reader. Generally I have got my rig quite quiet because I've modded it and the 480's usualy game locked at 60% fanspeed, CPU cooler has 2 fans at 40-50%, chassis fans are quiet so overall I'm happy with it. Old pics:

That's correct, but then why is background noise added as a measurement when it should be part of the ambient reading?
And unless the rig is passively cooled then 3.3dB above ambient is a crazily small measurement. Using that DeciBel app I'd round the figures to an integer value because I doubt that the microphones on any phone are that precise.

I understand where you are coming from but maybe he has a higher ambient noise level than you do, for example I got 14dB at 5cm and 5dB at 1 meter. The results seem too low although the room was quiet it wasn't silent, if there wasn't a rainstorm out side my window my delta noise values would have been higher. I think the member who got low reading may have had a greater ambient noise value and that is why he has a lower value. It's the same as CPU temps some people have the same CPU and same cooler but have significantly lower temps (not taking silicone lottery into the equation) this is down to the room temp which is

Oh yh to answer your question: it's added because you will never in your life be in a silent room, it will always have an ambient noise level around the 30s but the reason you would represent you rig noise levels as delta values is to show everyone how much louder your rig is when compared to everything else .
While that may seem to make sense, it does not. Our brains aren't hindered to background noise such as cars and wind or the fridge because we tune them out. Our PC however, especially when the fans boost to compensate for the rising temperatures, is more noticeable. Even if the computer was clicking away at 30dB, to the tune of the street noise... the only one we would hear is the PC.
