How is Virgin Media Broadband these days?

QuietOne

always shouting
I used to have Virgin Media over a year ago when the max speed was 50Mb, then I moved and the area had no cable. Now I have moved back to a cable area and I can get up to 152mb. I have gone for that package as I am greedy.

Has anyone had any issues with VM speeds or downtime?

Been utterly rock solid for me for three years. About yo get a free upgrade to 50mb/s, currently at 30mb/s. 15ms ping, and genuinely unlimited - I average around 80gb a month and no f*cks are given.

I only realy see speeds drop on sundays but thats to be expected as every man and his dog will be on the internet but still not slow internet just not full speed.

24/7 uptime, shitty "super hub", new upload caps are horrible, no download caps.

if you plan to stream BT infinity may be a better option, but for pure download speed VM is king.

Obviously this can change based on your area, i haven't had a single issue ever since the exchange was bought off NTL like 6-8 years ago.

To get around the superhub, i put it in modem mode and use my RT-N66U instead for wifi etc.

Pretty good but they keep putting prices up. They are doubling users speeds for free again this year but shortly after they will increase the price so it will work out to around what you would of been paying other wise.

The superhub 2 is pretty crap, mine locks up every now and then and I have to manually restart it.
Apart from that though I can't fault them, I wish they had better upload speeds though because they suck as they are. I'm on 60Mbps and I only get ~3Mbps up.

I don't get any caps on my connection though, i've downloaded like 60gb at prime time with no cap.
I used to get capped when I was on the 20Mbs connection but I haven't been capped since I went to 60Mbs.

Terrible for me. Download cap (2efffing mb/s for files from steam and everything that isn't origin), upload cap, the 'super' hub is crap and underpowered aaaaaaaaand I had to complain for six months to get what I get now.

I do miss VM, I am on BT at the mo but will be cancelled next month. I have 76mb/s unlimited package and my downloads were between 200GB - 500GB a month.

Joys of peak times, I get that too in evenings with BT.

It will be mainly for downloading and youtubing. Does their super hub have wireless? I can't use wired connection until my parents get rid of the lodger. My old VM point is in my old room :(

Super HUB is shite, but the service is great. I hate the download-upload ratio though. I get 120 down but a max of 12 up. I'd much prefer a slower down if it meant 20-30 up. meh.

Although I work for them, I don't recommend them for broadband if you are a heavy uploader due to the reductions in upload speed, and the limited upload speeds due to the platform they use.

I don't have any issues with my download speed other than on Steam, and that is mainly down to the servers for Steam because everything else downloads at 120Mb with no problems.

Even when I went directly to a hubsite and got on a 1Gb link it was still only downloading at around 20Mb to 40Mb.

The customer services can be annoying with them following a set procedure if you have a fault etc, regardless of what you tell them.

The price increases are annoying and I understand the reason for them because I plan, the business installs and the equipment used on business is pretty much the same as residential for most things.

Yes they are upping the top tier to 152Mb this year and next year, but there will be faster speeds coming ;)

The original superhub has poor wireless capabilities but it's rare that a new customer would get one of them now, however you can quite easily switch it to modem mode and use a different router with it if you wish.

The latency issues I had a while back are now fixed and they are slowly working on splitting the nodal areas, but it is costing a lot of money and taking time, and that will help to resolve quite a lot of issues that people may have in terms of, slow speeds or high latencies etc.

There are still areas that have issues however there are quite a lot that don't, and until you either speak to someone near you on Virgin or give them a try, you won't know for sure.

I can understand your frustration, especially uploading YouTube videos. Must take a considerable amount of time

if you still want good speed look into mains networking, could give you good speeds with out wifi and without cables.

Just had a quick look into them. I will give them a try. Thanks for the advice.

I will be downloading mainly, online gaming and Netflix. Upload doesn't bother me that much. I have ordered the XXL package and being installed next Monday :)

Personally Vm have been a pain in the ass (been with them for nearly 10 years) Recently lost my net completely for over a week, before that connections kept dropping in skype/any browser etc... The throttling i tend to get quite a bit in peak hours (and huge pings randomly shooting up to the 1000's in games) An engineer came out twice, the first one didn't do much, the second was supposedly some super trained one (Can't remember the name exactly) It seems to be 'ok' atm, but still get massive pings/pages taking a while to load.

It seems though that some areas/people get great service, where as others not so much. I was looking into bt recently as i think we can get their infinity if i wished. I would try to get a retention offer if the service wasn't so bad, but don't want to be tied to a contract in the current situation. Forgive my pessimism! ;)

I never had issues with them in the past. Only issue I had was my wireless router decided not to be wireless and had to enable it every few days. It was a Netgear one that I purchased for Wifi in the entire home.

Oh yeah I had one hiccup on the first day. My account would not authenticate, an hour later and passed back an forth to different departments they discovered that the monthly payments weren't set up. Other than that it has been fine.

That's why I want to go back to them again.

That's cool, i was just ranting about my recent problems with them  I read alot of varied opinions/services, so i think alot can depend where you are situated. I hope it's good for you man! Hopefully the service here will improve at somepoint ;)

Sorry I missed your post :(
I remember the 50Mb being the same price as what the 152Mb is now. I'm glad there are no caps. I'm glad I don't upload much otherwise I would cry with that DL/UL ratio.

Sorry I missed your post too. That is baaad. Wow 6 months! I guess they value their customers then.

Where abouts are you located?

I don't have fiber optic in my area so I have never been with them. A few of my friends I talk to on skype however are with them and they seem to have a lot more problems compared to my other friends on BT Infinity. They have oversold their capacity in a few areas which has made the broadband utterly unusable which is just plain stupidity. Also the provided router is utter crap and does crash from time to time. I have to say as well I'm unimpressed with the upload speeds they are providing to people considering the download speeds. Why oh why does there have to be such a terrible cap on the upload speeds?

Well honestly 12 up is enough, I upload most of my videos in 10-15 minutes which is reasonable. I'd just happily trade off a chunk of download speed for a better upload. I had to get the 120Mb down package just to have a competent upload speed.

I've only been with VM for about 6wks and so far so good, and no complaints.

Ok, I'm on the Broadband Only package (No TV, Phone etc...) and the shear download speed i'm getting is insane compared to what I used to have (its a wired connection and is exactly what i'm paying for), and yet the upload is more or less the same.... but you, like me, dont have the real need for a huge upload limit so everything will be peachy :)

If when you signed up to them they offered a free installation, make sure you keep the contract agreement thing safe. When I did it I was given Free installation, but when my first e-bill came it was showing the monthly charge + Installation, which in my case was £75 (£50 install + £25p/m).

A swift phone call explaining such, and was asked to send a picture of the contract agreement showing that the installation was free, and left it with them...quite literally about an hour after sending the picture proof I had a phone call from them saying that it will be amended.

So for Customer Service for me, was great.

Even if the upload speed was 50% of their download speed would be nice. So you would get 60Mb upload. Would make a big difference.

I have ordered it and my confirmation email says free installation so I will keep that. thanks for the tip :)

I am using my parents internet at the mo. Going from 76Mb to 8Mb is a big difference.

The first few months were horrible. I subscribed to 50Mb/s and during the day I got that but after 5pm speeds went down to 5Mb/s due to their bad infrastructure in the area. Eventually they sorted it out and upgraded me for free to 100Mb/s and then to 120Mb/s and it actually works now, even in the evening, so pretty happy with them now.
The so called "Superhub" is still horrible but I just can't be bothered to change it.
