Help with Network

Hi all

My m8 is thinking about buying a Dynamode 10/100 switch and wants to know how to configure it to the internet. His Cable broadband is connected to a wireless access point/router downstairs and his 3 pcs and 2 laptop are upstairs. Now would this work:

BroadBand --> Wireless Access Point/router --> Ethernet Briding Unit --> Ethernet Switch --> 3 PCs and 2 Laptops

Or would he be better just getting wireless cards

Thanks for the help

The solution to your friends problem, in my humble opinion, depends on the answers to these questions:

  • How the downstair's computers will use the network/internet.
  • The effective coverage of their wireless device with respect to any prospective location.
  • The probability that your friend will upgrade their wireless device and the impact such an upgrade would have on the remaining network hardware.

Without knowing their intentions, certain recommendations may become quickly obsolete, overly expensive, or unsatisfactory.

1. He is going to use the network for file sharing as well as LAN Gaming. He also uses the internet alot

2. He told me it is a US Robotics wireless router and turbo access point http://www.usr.com/products/networking/router-product.asp?sku=USR8054

3. I dont think he will be upgrading it any time in the future as he only got this 2 months ago

Although the USR model you quoted appears to be aimed at wireless only networks, you mention ethernet. Mixed media LAN/WAN networks can be difficult to get right. The following may be known to you already but is offered in good faith as it worked for me using a Netgear DG834PN and both ethernet/wireless connections:

1. Turn off sharing on all drives

2. Give each computer a unique name but the same workgroup name

3. Set up the router/bb modem with a common encryption type (turn on broadcast of SSID) - Use the main PC for this

4. Set up internet access only on each other machine

5. Connect to the internet on each comp then run the network setup wiz on each - turn on file/printer sharing and make sure you use the same workgroup name as in step 2 each time you run the wizard.

6. Do not use wireless network wiz unless all are on a WAN/wireless

7. Go to my network places on each comp and the default shared folders should all be there

8. Turn sharing on the hard drives that you want to share (personally I leave the ability for other comps to edit files unticked)

9. For printers, set them up as ready to share on the comps they're wired to and then browse for them as network printers on the other comps

10. Connect the game consoles to the network last.

Obviously, the above is a simple layman's guide to MMNs and the more experienced may well say it's wrong but it worked for me. There's tons of info on the web if you need the details for your friends particular hardware. e.g. (for US products)
