Hey guys, this is a quick question that i was hoping you maybe able to help me with as you were so helpful during my last and first thread. I have installed a new AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4400+ (Socket 939) CPU into my PC and was just wondering what i need to install to get it working and to get the most out of it, like drivers and stuff??

Please could you advise, Thanks in advance ; - )

You may also need a BIOS flash, depending on your board, but most 939s already support Dual Core, in the end a BIOS flash can't hurt.

Also: Moving thread to a more appropriate area, this is more customer service issues or direct ST questions.

Oh right sorry, yeah never checked, to be honest i was in a rush so didn't think about where it should be posted. Thanks for replying anyhow.

Its an Asus A8V Deluxe board...

BIOS Version/Date American Megatrends Inc. 1017.002, 14/11/2005

That any help? As i don't particularly fancy doing a BIOS flash incase it goes wrong and i have never done one before. Tried ASUS Auto update program but it can never connect to a server, plus i've read a few threads where people have had serious problems with it.

Download the latest official asus BIOS (guaranteed it will take an hour, get some bandwidth Asus), then use either AWDFlash or asus flash to pop it on

Sorry to sound stupid but i still don't know how to flash the BIOS properly! Do you mean go on their site and find the right one for my motherboard then do it manually? Because i'm not sure how to do that!

Here's the BIOS utiliy, download and install

Here's the latest BIOS, download that and unzip it to your desktop or somewhere

Run the BIOS tool, select offline BIOS update, select the file and tick "Clear CMOS" (think the asus one has that) and away you go

Ok i'm really worried now. I did exactly whet you said, but now when my PC starts up it says:

CMOS Checksum Bad

Press F1 to run SETUP

Press F2 to load default values and "something else"

Whats this about?? Also now that the BIOS has been flashed will it loose all the settings in the BIOS menu, eg./ y hardware, voltage, startup settings??

:( Please help

When u get to u`r desktop, goto Device Manager->Processors and be sure it has 2 entries for u`r processor in there. If u`r BIOS doesn`t recognize the rev of u`r chip, it may tell the OS u have a standard AMD 64 4400+

K cheers. Yeah I think it's ok. In the device manager bit it says under processor that I have two AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4400+

Is that correct. If anything my PC seems to be running slower! But I think that may have something to this anti virus/Spyware suite I have just installed: Zone Alarm, everything takes forever?

Also do i need to change any power supplies to the CPU in the BIOS now, if so to what value?

Just have to install the AMD Dual Core Optimiser for games I think.

That looks very correct to me.

Can any1 say whether the drivers he has for this (which will come through windows of course) are any better than downloading the drivers from AMD ??

I've never used that, but yes some suites are notorious for bringing your computer to its knees. There are free programs out there that do anti virus/Spyware just as well. Maybe start a new thread asking what people prefer to use?

If you mean voltages then these should be set automatically by the BIOS.

The drivers on the AMD site seem to be ancient (version 1.3.2.16 posted on July 2006). :(
