Help! Persistent clicking noise! *solved*

Hi

Here's my problem. Yesterday I found that my right speaker of my 5.1 surround sound system was persistently kept clicking, very rapidly. I plugged in my headset and found that the right speaker in those also makes the same noise, and any type of speaker I use does the same thing, in the right. I think it's something to do with the line-in jack because I was tampering with it before the sound started. Out of curiosity, I plugged my ipod into the line-in, and then the music replaced the clicking. Also the clicking/music/whatever's volume is in sync with the volume I've set, so the only way I get no clicking is by muting the master volume. I've done the normal stuff like disabling and enabling various sound things and un/reinstalling drivers etc. but the problem persists. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks

Max

Could be hardware failure, but first, open the FULL volume mixer, mute everything in playback but the output (front, center, back, sub) then go to recording and mute what can be muted there or set to the lowest possible value if it cannot be muted.

Then try again. The input/recording circuitry is very sensible to RF inside a computer case and picks up everything. If it's muted or at a very low level the RF recorded interference should go down.

Thanks Sihastru! You didn't actually solve my problem directly, but on the muting in/outs step, I found a line-in mute!

... I feel pretty dumb right now :P
