My XFX 6870 has finally died after 3 years of use. This happened so suddenly and i'm fairly certain its dead and nothing to do with drivers but i may be wrong.

Here are some pictures.

Not sure what to do. I could purchase a GTX 780 for around £330-350 however apparently new cards are coming out soon which will drop the 780's in price.

Not sure if the 770 is worth it either for around £225-260

I'm currently using a 5770 borrowed off a friend and its not the best :(

Any suggestions, Thanks.

Remove the card, blow out the slot with canned air, wipe the contacts with IPA and re-seat it, then blow out all the other slots in there as well. Trey it again, could be dust contamination causing a light power short.

I think we should call this the Nintendo method.

Not sure how dust is going to get into something that already *has* contact ? Dust only really comes into play when putting in new stuff, this feels more like a solder issue, or looking at the corruption, dead Ram chips

The card was already immaculate because I clean my of with an air compressor and I've reseated it, still no luck.

Any suggestions on what card to get next? Or wait for.

That issue is caused by blown capacitors. Find the capacitor and replace it. Capacitors are very cheap. If you don't know how to do it then get the card to a TV repair guy, he can fix it for you for less than 20Euros I hope

Before you do anything else or spend any money, try the bake method to fix it!

Gave this is a go and it worked. My graphics card is running quite a bit hotter than before doing this (yes i let it cool down :L) but multiple external fans will fix this. Baked it at 200c for 11 minutes, no artifacts so far and played about 5 minutes of borderlands 2.

Performance is also not as good as before, but hey it works and is still better than a 5770. What worries me now is how long this will last.

1080p and i think im going to looking towards nvidia this round unless amd have something better

I would usually suggest that you wait for the next iteration of cards to come out before you make a decision, but in your situation it probably isn't a good idea since your card could die at any moment.

How much are you looking to spend? If you want to go down the Nvidia route and you don't want to spend too much, a 760 might be a good choice.

I want to be able to play games like GTA V, Borderlands Pre-sequal, arma 3 with good fps at high settings.

I still have a 5770 if the 6870 dies but it means i cant really play anything else but cs go.

If i were to buy a card now, im looking at the aftermarket 290 or gtx 780 and maybe 770.

Ah, I forgot about your 5770. In that case you should probably wait for the next generation of cards and then make a decision.

However, if you absolutely can't wait, I would go for a 290 or a 780. The final decision is yours, but an aftermarket variant of a 290 or a reference 780 will be more than sufficient for the games you mentioned (at 1080p).

lol that's why you are not a technician. :)

Using the 5770 again, sadly the 6870 only lasted another day and now it wont display a thing.

I have an i5 2500k @ 4.3ghz which i think should be sufficient for games like arma.
