Project Red Light District

Love dat marble! Looking good!

Thank you so much!

A brief update: the rad and coolant arrived, so i spent last night painting and sanding and painting and cleaning.

Oh, did i mention that i painted? Dann that 360 takes a lot of paint to cover!

Photos coming soon.

Looks good man. I'm happy that you decided to tear it down and 'do it properly'. I end up doing that with all of my rigs tbh. Build them at least once and then thing "Eff that, that's not good enough" and end up tearing out every single last screw :D

Just inherited a new member into the clan. My wife decided she didn't want the rig I built her. It's specced to the eyeballs too, 8 core Ivy Xeon and a Fury X ! Might look into folding.

The biggest shock with all this for me was the colours i ended up with.

I always intended a red and black build. Not a blue/green with red trim.

What doesn't she like about it?

She just finds it terribly clunky. It's a serious beast, about 55kg empty. Mind you it's really quiet (mix of 1500 and 800 RPM noiseblocker bionics) but yeah, she just doesn't like being tied to a desk.

Worst thing I ever told her to buy was her sodding tablet. She had a Galaxy now she's got the latest Ipad. I swear it's glued to her hands dude.

I might turn it into a server. It's perfect for it really. Quiet (60w CPU FFS) and plenty of storage (six 500gb Pipelines).

Woah nice.

So, my wife and brat get home tomorrow morning, so I'm working on the rig trying to finish it off before they land.

And wouldn't you know it, after saying that i haven't had a fitting leak on me, i had one leak on me.

Fortunately i had a spare so it wasn't the end of the world.... Although i thought it was, because i had forgotten about my spare.

Swapped it out, and now the while thing it's leak testing. I'll have some pics tonight when I'm done getting everything ready.

At the moment I'm leak testing with di water. Will bee draining and switching to coolant later tonight if i don't find any leaks after 6 or so hours.

Update to come!

Ok, so i'm calling this one complete. I just need to get it booted and working (which I don't have time to do now - gotta rush to the airport).

Here is the latest batch of photos. I will update this thread again once i've got the PC into position on its temporary home (pending new desk purchase), then when it goes to its permanent home (the new desk), and finally when I do the 6-12 monthly maintenance cycle (update on coolant, basically).

It's been a fun build, and i've learned a lot. Special thanks to AlienALX, as without his specific inspiration (Project Dianoga) I severely doubt that I would have done as much as I have.

I have tried to stay true to the basic brief of the build: be as ghetto as possible (i.e. anything outside of the watercooling fittings/tubes that I didn't own already, buy as cheap as possible, and make it work).

Please find below the final photos of the work stages in progress. I will be taking a break from my usual routine of commenting on every photo - as I am pressed for time. I will edit this post with such comments, later - although most of the photos speak for themselves.

Finally, LOVE the Pastel coolant! The colour is almost SPOT ON for the spray paint that I chose to use (this was actually a happy fluke: I chose that paint colour without having seen the coolant!).

Do you think I should send the details of this project to Fractal? I'm not sure...

Well, here we are. At the end of the project.

I have managed to boot the PC up, and get it installed in it's new home...

This home is a temporary home - until I get myself a bigger/more appropriately sized desk. But for now, it will do!

I hope you have enjoyed the journey as much as I have!

Looks good but my only critique is the red accents with all the blue just don't quite look right

I understand, it's a bit vegemite. Unfortunately about half of it is red leds built into the board, and i have no idea on how to change that.

If i could, then i would consider modding the mb by painting it and switching out the leds.

Like it but yeah, that red. I wish you could get push on PCIE covers. Well, that or I had a 3D printer :D

Sorry for the necro, just providing a quick update regarding the colour of the fluid 6+ months later, and advising of an update that is currently being planned for when i do the next lot of maintenance (probably in 5-6 months).

The colour has not changed as yet. It is the same blue as the day it was originally put in. I have not got particularly hot components though, so maybe that is why.

I'm currently planning on addressing the red comments from earlier. Long term, the fix will be to buy a black motherboard and updated cpu, but for now, I'm thinking of the quickest avid easiest way to cover it up, without risking the board itself.

If you guessed "vertical gpu" then you are on my wavelength. I bought the cooler master vertical bracket, and intend to remove all the pci slots when i do my next year down. Due to this by necessity changing the tubing runs, i also intend to decouple the pump/res (making then two independent units), turn the 360 rad on its head, and hide more of the tubing under the false floor i created.

I think that this will make the aforementioned red much less onerous, as well as cleaning up the lines of tubes.

Thoughts?
