Get to change ISP this month

Hey guys,

So this month I finally get to change ISP and get rid of Orange. So now my Step-dad wants to know who to upgrade to, can anyone tell me any good ISP's preferably who don't throttle you if you download to much and get good speeds. I was looking at ADSL24 has anyone had any experience with them in the past?

Also when we upgrade we will need a router what do you guys think of the ASUS RT-N56u Diamond? any good? or any other suggestions as this really isn't my field of expertise

Thanks in advance!

TBH m8, if you are in a cable area, go for cable from Virgin Media. They offer upto 100mb, which downloads at about 12mbps, unlike ADSL, which downloads MUCH SLOWER.

I have ADSL as I can't get cable, I miss cable so much!

I live in the southwest in a area where I can't get cable and my ADSL is only 2mb

Had some problems with a few ISPs but as soon as I went with UKFSN (enta.net reseller) all the problems went and my ping times are amazing

I've been with them for a few years now and haven't had any problems altho it's £22/mo for 30gb/mo peak and unlimited from 00:00 to 08:00 + weekends

I was looking to change but I noticed ADSL prices are like 3x the price of ADSL2 for bandwidth

not really fair tbh (all the offers I thought were cheap were ADSL2 also and not available to me).

I think it depends on what you're after. If you want to download a lot then go for a ISP that offers unlimited, but if you play FPS games online and want low ping times go with an ISP that is known.

Also multiplay use enta.net for some of the routing on their servers so pingtimes to them is pretty good. Routing to europe is also so much better on enta.

Whenever I've had any problems with my line, I've just contacted enta and they've had a BT engineer out next day, just like being on a business package

Thanks equk.. Have you ever had any problems with UKFSN blocking ports or throttling?.. Just looked at the website and you can get unlimited downloads for £19.99 a month at the sacrifice of upload speed which would be fine by me.

I would avoid virgin media (i've been with then for 3-4 years), their download speeds are great but you get throttled like mad, they advertise the entire day from 9am to 9pm as peak time and if you pass the download limit you get throttled for 5 hours even if it was 5 mins before peak time ends.

Virgin Media Traffic Management

Be there are awesome, however are adsl. cable is the way to go but the current providers screw you over, bt infinity maybe? haven't tried it or know anyone who uses it though.

(btw don't be fooled by "unlimited downloads" always look at the fair usage and traffic shaping policies)

Unfortunately fiber optics isn't available in my area otherwise that would be a must. But I'll have a look into BE there hoping to find a truly unlimited download option with someone that can also give me a good speed.

Definitely give BE a look at, my brother uses them and he has to download/upload files to a ftp server all day for his site. He has no throttling or problems, even with his basic 10mb connection, their customer service is also brilliant.

Again don't have personal experience or know anyone who use IDNet but it has been recommended in this thread so IDNet / BE seems the way to go, try looking at their forums to see how customers are treated or how good their services are (I think BE forums are for account holders only).

btw for router recommendations, I currently use this and have been for around 2 months, had no problems at all and its easy to setup and use, it also has QoS engine which manages traffic, basically meaning if you were playing an online game and your relative was casually browsing the internet / watching videos you would get more of the bandwidth as you need it and the traffic would be managed smoothly = less lag and people can use the internet properly while your gaming.

for router recommendations, i can recommend any draytec vigor model, i have the 2800, and its incredibly sturdy, and solid.

Thanks kara for the router recommendation. That one sounds perfect as my stepdad has an internet tv and often gets films streamed to it so that one looks like a good idea

Worth memtioning that BE are owned by O2, and use the same equipment as far as I'm aware.

Not sure if there's any decent ADSL2 packages on O2 anymore (been on it a few years), but I'm on unlimited bandwidth for £13 a month.

Also for reference, I'm 1.5 Miles from my exchange, and on ADSL2 I get on average 9/10Mbps down and 900k/1Mbps up speeds. Never really noticed any traffic shaping, but not sure what the policy is, or if the policy has changed since I signed up with them.
