Few questions from a starting Folder

Hey,

After watching the latest TinyTomLogan video, I became inspired to start folding, because I figure I have a relatively nice PC, may as well help people with it.

I just have a few questions with it before I start

- Is there any passcode or anything on the folding group (using SMP and it asks for one)?

- Does it scale how much it's doing based on other load? (I game competitively, just wanted to know if I have to close F&H while playing or not)

You do have to get a number just can't remember how to go about it off the top of my head but someone else will let you know for sure as to gaming I would not recommend you game and fold at the same time

the code for the team is 98860 any passcode that is being asked for is your own personal passcode. To answer your second question it depends on the spec of your rig and the demand of the game. I switch it off if i'm going on BF3 as i need all the processing power i can get, but if i'm going on counter strike, then i don't really need to worry too much about frame rates. Your not going to get a very high PPD if you plan on folding whilst playing BF3 anyway.

Oh and btw, congrats on your first post and welcome to the forum dude, also welcome to the folding team. Come join the benchmarking team as well if you are interested, we are always looking for more people to join and help us to shoot up the team ranks

TF2 in directx 8, so more CPU intensive than gpu) on an i5 2500k @4.2 Ghz and a GTX570, 16GB Corsair Vengence 1600Mhz C9.

Thanks, hopefully I'll be of some use

I would get your 570 folding too then, you should be able to pick up a decent amount of PPD with your rig that way. I think around 20,000 ppd should be possible, other people can correct me if i'm wrong, that's the sort of figure i'd expect from folding both the cpu and gpu, if anything you could get more than that, that was just a conservative guess.

Folding is done at the lowest priority so it shouldn't suck too many CPU cycles away from the game, it's the presence in RAM that will have the larger effect but with 16GB I don't think you need worry about it. You should stop GPU folding before gaming though.
