How to put a case back together?

Hi guys,

Not sure this is the right place to post or what, so if it isn't, please accept my apologies and move it as needed.

I'm in the planning and accumulation stage of my next project (not going to start until i have almost everything), and one of the things i will be doing is taking my case apart, painting it and putting it together again.

As i haven't done this before (or anything even remotely like it for that matter), i have a few questions for those that have.

How do i go about replacing the rivets? I could re-rivet i suppose, but i think i would much rather use rivnuts. But here's the rub. In my research i have yet to find a rivnut that is smaller than 5mm, where as the rivets being drilled out are 3mm... My concern ous that with the larger guage hole, that i will negatively affect how the case goes together (e.g. prevent some panel or other from connecting properly)?

Also, where should i start looking for good replacement screws? Bunnings has alot of screws, but none that really look the dogs business, and I'm at a loss for anywhere else near to me.

Finally, when it comes to actually putting the case back together, is it really as difficult as it seems? I would think that it would end up being 6 or so panels, so not too difficult to figure out what goes where...?

Youre overthinking things.

Use rivets. Most cases just need 3.2mm rivets and you can easily get them in black too.

If youre worried about putting it back together, take pics before you strip it.

I think youre worrying over nothing though.

Fair enough. Not the first time that statement has been leveled at me, probably won't be the last either. Thanks for the assist!

If you rivet it wrong - you can just drill them out again.

The rivnet thing really doesnt make any sense IMHO - that are massive and look horrid if not used for what they are designed for.

If youve got a black case buy some black rivets. Its easy to see the hole size on your case and measure (as long as you didnt ruin the holes when you removed the originals)
