faulty motherboard? BIOS problems?

hallo, i bought a maximus formula mobo sometime ago. i finally got around to installing it, attach everything up (power/ monitor etc...), power it up and guess what?

i get lights on the power button and soundcard etc but no power. so i hit the clear CMOS button, restart and hit the power button again. the lights flash (the fan buttons to show that there is a load or whatever they mean). they light up for a fraction of a second and then go off again. makes me think that there is either something wrong with the interrupt bus or that the BIOS chip if knackered. with any luck its the latter because i should be able to replace it.

any thoughts?

any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

yeah, its all compatible, that is to say that it has the right pin-out. there shouldnt be any power issues because it's a 750watt PSU. I doubt its too powerful, but my rig only uses about 4-500 watts of power

okay it certainly sounds like a bad motherboard.

The first thing I would try is strip the system down completely, remove all but one hard drive, one stick of memory, the sound card and try it again.

If you still get nothing I'd say it's time for an RMA.

:wiggle: oh dear, i did a baddie and got it from ebay (virtually half price) and like i said, it was quite a while ago i bought it. i had a lot of things i needed to do before i could check it out, so i doubt i could return it.

what happens if you have a dodgy BIOS chip?

Nowadays the BIOS chip is soldered to the motherboard and on that note there's no way to replace it like the old days.

Generally Bad Bios = New Motherboard, although having said that most high end motherboards these days offer a BIOS recovery feature. My Rampage does so the Maximus definately does aswell.

Anyway if you think that's the culprit, give that a shot, but since you're getting nothing when you turn it on, I'd say it's safe to say the motherboard is bad.

If it was sold as working you could try and claim through ebay but it usually has to be done within 30 days of purchase.

Always test stuff you get off the bay folks.

yeah, in retrospect i should've asked a mate to run it to check it worked. well i suppose i'll do that next time. if i do it again that is :S.

is the Asus helpline any good?

as zoot said but i would go without the sound card

I worded it completely arseways again, (language ain't my strong point lol :p)

Anyway, what I meant was:

Remove all hard drive connections, All but one stick of memory, Your sound card, Any USB connections (both internally and externally), all Fan connections except the CPU fan, and any other PCI cards with the exception of the graphics card from the motherboard.

This should rule out pretty much everything but the motherboard. If you still get nothing out of the system it'd be time for motherboard replacement...
