Fairly Large Problem, Any Help would, Well Help =]

Hello, and I hope the German title didn't deter you. Anyway, recently I bought two more gigs of the same type of RAM for my system, (Gskill DDR2 @ 800MHz), now they are in correctly and everything, but when I boot up my computer, the vista welcome center says I only have 2.75 gigabytes of memory.

Curious, I went into the dxdiag to try to get some more information, and it told me that I have 2814MB of RAM. I tried contacting microsoft about this, but being microsoft they said my trial period of the windows live support had ended, and I needed to pay $90 in order to ask a question... (yes, very

ty).

So, I came here.

is there anything anyone knows that can help? I'd appreciate it very much

Is it 32bit Vista?

If so, this may be correct, as 32bit Windows can only address 4GB of memory, including all memory in the system. This includes the graphics memory etc. So it's 4GB minus Graphics memory minus virtual memory etc!

32 bit vista has a maximum memory support of 4GB..

this includes system memory, altho u havent said how much u have, lets assume u have 3gb...

so u have 3gb of RAM, and lets assume 512mb of graphics card memory, and lets also assume 768mb of virtual memory....

the virtual memory and gfx card memory are prioritised, and you can have max 4000mb, so when u take away the 512mb and the 768mb, you are left with 2.75gb of memory, which is assigned to your ram.

i wasnt aware that gfx and virtual memory counted, but as u can see, both these items take away from ur total memory size.

There is in XP.

Start --> Control Panel --> System --> Advanced --> Performance Settings --> Advanced --> Virtual Memory Change --> check 'No Paging File' for each drive then Set and OK.

Surely if you turn it off it will slow your system down?

not really, infact is can help because it means that windwos will only use the (much faster) ram rather than the slower page file.

So if i turn off virtual memory in vista 64-bit.. will i see a performance increase?? or decreasee?

short answer - it depends..

long answer - 2gb u might be pushng it in vista, anything above that u shd be safe to disable.
