Extending Phone Line

Hi there,

My dad is currently converting the loft and is looking for the best way to extend the current phone line on the landing up into the loft.

He picked up a RJ45 cable from work, would this be any use or do you need to use telephone extension cables.

What would be the best way of doing it.

Thanks, Sam

Cat5e is normally quite good for adsl extensions etc. But normal phone wire is ok.

I wired my house from the master socket. You just need to know what wires to use. 2 on master and 3 to slaves as 1 is ringer, altho some people say the ringer isn't needed :)

If you want to go all professional, you could get a mastersocket that has a built in microfilter and take off the slaves from the filtered side and have the ADSL on the non-filtered :) no more need for loads and loads of microfilters and it's also how BT did ADSL when it first came out. That's how I setup mine.

If you already have the wire Hyper and your system is in series, just extend it from the last slave in the circuit and get a slave socket from a electrical wholesaler or DIY place.

As long as you get the wires right, there should be no problem. Easy job tbh :).

There is quite a lot of information on the net about telephone wiring aswell. Altho it is so simple :).

We have a BT extension box at the top of the stairs, do I just put the wires where the existing wires already are inside the extension box ?

Any chance of a diagram ;)

taking the "ringer" wire from the master socket can help improve the speed and or stability of your adsl :D

i did this to mine, and got +1mb to my adsl speed

and fewer disconnections

(im on max adsl so my adsl connects at the fastest it can)
