I have a few Dell Optiplex 740 systems here at work with 2GHz AMD X2 CPUs. I need a little more power in them so I contacted my Dell rep to see what the max CPU supported in this systems is.
She replied with this, "I cannot send anything out on an OptiPlex 740 due to a non-disclosure agreement."
...really...
So I contacted Dell Government support online chat. I was told the X2 is the max CPU supported in the 740...then I found this link and pointed out to him that a quad core phenom is supported and I'm just looking for specific models to ensure they work.

He tells me to call tech support.
So, I call tech support, get transferred a few times and ask my question. I wait on hold for 5 mins and the tech gets back on the line. She says the following in broken English. "Sir, I am happy to tell you can upgrade system with faster CPU, but must be i3 or i5 CPU."
......... ... ..... .... .... <-----That's extended silence from me.
Tech: Sir, are you still there?
Me: Yes <sigh>
Tech: Have I solved your issues, sir?
Me: <sigh>
Tech: Sir?
Me: Yes
Tech: Sir, thank you for calling Dell, would you like me to close this case?
Me: <sigh>
Tech: Sir?
Me: Yes, <click>
/facepalm
Still don't know what CPU I can upgrade these systems with...
