Right guys, my dad wants to go for a 20 incher :)

After a bit of googling ive seen that not all games support widescreen, is this true?

The main games he is going to be playing are:

- BF2

- COD2

- NFS:MW

and some future games.

If it is true then, what exactly is it going to be like if a game is going to be played which does not support widescreen?

Thanks all,

G

[p.s: he wants to order it asap so fast help will b appriaciated alot!]

Pretty much all new games will support widescreen although I don't have any of those games so can't help you there. I think widescreen for games is much nicer and is an advantage over those without. You can check out http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/forum/ for more info.

Are you set on the 2005fpw? (although I'm not sure what other widescreen 20" there are apart from the apple). It did have some major backlight issues but they may have been sorted out by now. Also the response time averages out closer to 25ms I believe but that should still suffice for games (hardly any LCD match their specified specs when it comes to response time and contrast ratios etc).

Yes my dad has been looking at the Dell 2005FPW, what kind of issues were occuring? were the screens able to be rma'd?

Any think you can suggest for sub £400?

Thanks :)

Thanks For the link m8

verry helpfull

I'm pretty sure the teething problems with the 2005fpws were sorted out, you can't beat it at this price point so yes go with it - I bought my Dad one (although he doesn't game) and he's very happy with it.

No probs Blow mate.

I have a 2005fpw now, and its the best monitor I've ever had. No problems what so ever. Those backlight problems were the actual panel I believe as apple had the same thing with the earlier shipments.

As for gaming I play many games and the only 1 that supports widescreen I play is Quake 4. I prefer them in normal aspect to be honest but thats just personal preference. If a games not widescreen it'l whack it in the middle with the option of zooming in on the screen. All round a great monitor, I highly reccomend it.

Thanks,

Well he might get a new graphics card (6800GT/X800XT) how bad are the games when they are 'zoomed' in?

Do you get lines down the sides or what?

If anyone could provide images before he takes the plunge i'd be really greatful!

yes but with BF2 punkbuster detects you have a modified file and kicks you, as it must think you're cheating... :(

and that is one of his main games...

If I can find my cam I'll take some pics tomoz of SWG running in non widescreen mode for you. You basically get lines on either side of the normal screen, its hardly annoying and I actually find it better than putting SWG into widescreen mode.

Heres a few shots of my 2005fpw running SWG in widescreen, took them this morning as I was running outa the house on my phone.

I'll do ones of it in 4:3 aspect later.

seriously mate buy one, i had teh dell 2005fpw and i fell in love with it straight away, for the extra workspace on your desktop its well worth it and trust me the edges shouldnt bother your dad that much, youll still see as much of the screen as you would on the regular model but be stuck with less desktop space normally...

i used to have 2 x 19" crts and 1 dell 2005fpw was enough to replace them both and didnt leave me wanting another monitor for space...

no no it was just the little voice inside my head telling me i needed another :P
