Daily Idiot Log

My god..I just had to post this. Ive just spent 2 hours on the phone with this guy. One of those who says things but his knowledge database is based on incorrect data. He purchased a 8500GT from us 11 months back and it went faulty, it went back to manufacturer for repair or replace and we got it back and sent it out to him. He then phones up because he wants advice on a new motherboard. Below are "Statements" made within the conversation

"I wont run Vista 64bit because its a known fact that NO games work on it"

"Well my other system, a 1.7GHZ Celeron with 1GB of Ram and FX5200 128MB graphics card will run all the need for speed games in high res, except for Need for Speed Undercover, any idea why, as pro street was fine"

"Well the FX5200 was the top of the range card a few years back"

"The 8500GT was so sweet, because at the end of the day its the best card there is for gamers, and I'm a gamer"

"Any CPU under 3.2GHZ I'm not interested in, as 3.2GHZ was the standard a few years back"

"No programs use dual core so I think anything with more then one core is a waste of time"

Then he said

"Well i just picked up a AMD 6000 from ebay, 6GHz should do me fine"

"ASUS, what they make motherboards now?"

ARRRGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!!

hahahaha, it's like he's only just got the internet and a PC.

He must mean NFS: Hot Pursuit ;)

By the looks of it, my 1GHz Artigo is probably on similar par with that. It'll play Drakan at 1900*1080 I'll have you know. But the 64bit system and no games working...perhaps I've been on Acid for the last few months but I could have sworn I had fallout and oblivion running happily.

yeah ... I mean I've been running vista x64 happily since RC1 and even my snes emulators work...doesnt vista actually come with purble palace...and chess...so I think NO games is a big statement..and I'm T-total so cant be blamed on drug ingestion :D plus im reconing he meant resolutions above 640x480 when he said Hi-res...

Hold on, the 5200FX was near bottom of the range and the 5000 series was so bad that Nvidia had to cheat to get the 3dmark scores up.

yeah and the 8500GT is not the best card you can buy...the point is those statements are made by someone who hasnt evolved enough that he doesn't even have thumbs...

Perhaps this is why he may be having difficulty in getting games to run on x64 systems. Not due to incompatibility, but due to difficulty in holding a mouse:

Unfortunately, thumbnails are just the wrong way to describe this photo

Is this normal, to have people that don't ever run scans, and who don't check before downloading?

I've had quite a heated argument with someone who basically insisted that VKs are completely pointless and scaremongering, who then decided to perform an debating coupe de grace by telling me "he's been downloading for years without using one and has never had a virus".

I almost coughed up a lung with laughter. Ok it finished the argument, just not in the way he was expecting.

hahaha...I had something similar but it was quite a whilst back...about 2000...he then phoned me about a month after..explaining to me that his 4 year old daughter was very upset..the reason being he'd contracted the dreaded "Gay Male Explicit Porn Slide Show" virus...which resulted in a full system wipe...some people...

We got a PC in the other day for a Windows re-install. The bloke who owns it is a mate, so I told him I would do it on the cheap for him. When I spoke to him, I told him to remove the cables from the 'box' (that's his choice of words), and not to force any out. He done it while I was on the phone to him, and I heard all the usual grunts and groans from him getting on the floor and under the desk. Anyways, I asked him if all was sweet and he said yes.

I have only just had time to take a look at the rig, and he's gone and dropped a boo-boo!

It seems as if my lecture on pulling the cables out gently fell on deaf ears. He managed all the others but seems to have struggled with the mouse PS2 port. So much so, that he's left the mouse end of the connector in the socket. I thought it may have been stuck with a little rust or debris, but it popped out no problems. He must have given it a right old yank to seperate it from the cable.

I know what the next job is for my mate, sourcing a new mouse for him:D

I spoke to my mate earlier on and asked him how the hell he managed it, and I got the usual reply - "I dunno, must have been like that already". Bet he tries blaming it on me, but all I am going to ask is where the other half of the mouse is at:D

Big chance he'll come to you tomorrow: my mouse isn't working. I put it in the right hole but it just doesn't work. :p
