Hi, I have an XtremeAudio currently, but was wondering if I should bother carrying it over to my next build, which will have ALC892. I've read a lot of people saying that onboard still sucks, but XtremeAudio has also got to be the bottom rung of sound cards in terms of quality... Can anyone elaborate? I'm actually considering a Xonar Dx
 
Unless your a true audiophile you really don't need audio cards because the latest mobo's have good audio chips on board. So unless you are indeed an audiophile the onboard audio will be perfect.
 
My onboard audio died a very sudden death, but thankfully HD audio was available through my graphics card. Onboard audio quality was "OK" but you definitely benefit from a dedicated card.
 
Asus Xonar D2X is a good choice

Ugh, drop that card mate. Mine's eating dust on top of my closet as we speak. Just thinking about all the driver issues I've had with that thing will cause me nightmares..
 
Unless you have good speakers you will not notice a difference between on board and pci. I myself use a xonar DX because Creative drivers suck as well as Realtek.
 
yeah, i was thinking about driver issues more than anything else. it's on xp so it's fine now, but i'll probably ditch it like you guys are saying. i'm not an audiophile, but sound quality does matter a lot to me ^^". maybe a xonar will be an upgrade choice down the line.

What is the best sound card on scan for speakers then? don't really know anything about soundcards and my dad is an audiophile

The STX isnt bad for speakers, its just a waste compared to the lower end models cos the extra money goes on the headphone amp. The Xonar D2X is probably the best one that it is worth getting for speakers but if you are getting those corsairs then the Xonar DX is about as good as is worth getting. That is the simple answer anyway, if you want to get into proper high end sound systems it is going to get much more complicated with amps and stuff.

Yeah, my dad knows about all that stuff, we'll probably end up integrating it into the sound system at home, I probably should have asked which one on scan is the best with the red and white phono outputs so we can use any speakers

a large quantity of hands-on reviewers talk about klipsch promedia 2.1 (for more bass, gaming) or the av40 (music, clearer mids and highs - totally appeals to me) in that price range. they're both a fair bit cheaper actually. just some suggestions in case you hadn't heard of those before, though these things are obviously subjective, and if your dad liked those corsairs then power to him
