CPU lapping, any ideas?

Hey guys.. I have had enough of my normal CPU and I think that I am going to screw around with it and give it a good old lapping :)

I have seen the kit from KustomPCs, can anyone let me know what this is like?

Also, my dad isn't convinced and says that I should leave it alone.. the copper will corrode etc, how can I purswade him to let me do it any ways (with it being at my own risk seeing as I paid for it..?)

There are certain risks associated and warranty issues (bye bye warranty) but you have understood these. From what I've heard its unlikely to make that much odds (maybe 1-2C). The copper should be reasonably well protected as the heatsink and TC will provide a block to air.

In response to persuasion, don't tell him your doing it...what parents don't know about your computer will generally not hurt them.

As a side note, make sure you keep enough cash for a new CPU on the side, so that if you do wreck it, you don't have to live without a PC for a while.

Haha I am going to be giving this CPU a lapping no matter what, I am like £65 in debt to my dad so if I screw up I won't have a PC for a long time.. or I can put in an old Intel Celeron 2.53GHz and OC the hell out of it? :)

Yeah I fully understand the warranty is GONE as soon as it touches the sandpaper, but I am willing to take the risk as I have watched the vids on how to do it and it seems really simple.

I have heard that lapping can take up to 8 - 10C off your CPU so, I am willing to give it a try and I will let you guys know how it goes :) I hope that this is true, will allow me to push very high amounts of volts through this little babey.. come on.. please? :D

My dad already knows that I want to do it, as he will be the one who is paying for the kit so he has to know what he is letting me spend my cash on (he gave me £20 today because my bro got £20) so I will spend the cash on the lapping kit from KustomPCs I reckon.

Thanks for your advice, I think I am going to go ahead with it, most likely lap my CPU cooler as well if I have enough sand paper left over! :)

Lap your heatsink first, that will make a much bigger difference, unless the company is really careful. That will also show you how to lap things. The heatspreader on the CPU is generally quite smooth. it will not gain you a magical 8C etc.

If you are certain, do the heatsink first then see if there is enough difference.

I'm going to do both so that there is a perfect flat surface, will give much better results.

It pretty much creates a vacume so there is NO air in there, I will let you guys know how I get on.. I am going to let my dad watch those movie clips when he gets home andif I get his approval I am going to be lapping my CPU around a sandpaper course :D:yumyum:
