Could someone recommend me a graphics card for new system?

The 6800GTs where monsters for their time and even i had one flashed to Ultra running OCed lol. For AGP honestly i would have gone no lower than a 7800GS. AGP bridges really take it outa the cards from what i can tell, but the performance out of a 7600GS should be good enough to play most things on medium. And as far as your CRT comment, there isnt THAT much difference between an analog LCD and CRT. Only difference i can see is tuexture and clarity between an analog CRT and digital LCD.

As it is just the card on its own, I would go no higher than the £50 mark. You want to keep as much as you can for an after market cooler so you can squeeze as much out of it as possible.

Can you get a cooler for the 6800nu's?

In all honesty I don’t think I’ll overclock the card anyway, have never even purchased a graphics card before and don’t really want to be messing with a brand new pc just incase!!

I think I’ll go with the soft mod though to unlock it (if you can with this model) but will I really need to get another fan for that? Would the default one not suffice??

I may try to OC it later on when I familiarize myself with it but will definitely not start off doing that.

Need to win the auction first too!! Doesn’t finish for another 2 hours : ( Will post back with the results. Hope someone else can help in regards to the queries above!!

Thanks again

How much more money is it worth than the 128 version? The auction hasn’t closed yet so its possible I could get it for £40 in all. I don’t mind paying the extra £18 if its going to be worth it.

Plus what do you mean about rep? I take it your referring to returns and support etc.

If you reckon its worth the £18 more then I’ll cancel my bid and go for it. Then I’ll stop bothering you I promise! For a while anyway! : ) lol

Apparently the AGP can be unlocked.

Has cost £68.14 in all with VAT and p&p.

Little over my budget but with unlocking it I should get good performance hopefully.

Thanks for all your help guys.

Let me know if I've been done in!!

Thanks again!

OOO we were wrong Ham, apparently they do unlock but its a 50/50 chance that you will be able to unlock everything. BFG, XFX and eVGA seem to unlock well but im not sure about an Point Of View one although ppl reviewing it have done it.

Just one thing:

No ETA

Out Of Stock

Will you be able to get hold of it?

Well there was one in stock when I ordered so hopefully that should be mine. Going to contact them to find out. Should have it by Friday though. Now I just need to wait for my new system to arrive next week, get my OS up and running and then install the card. Can't wait!!

The ebay auction closed and I won it for £38 (£43 with p&p)! I have emailed the chap though saying unfortunately I need to withdraw my bid. Tried to do it but couldn't find the option anywhere!! :(

So in all, I've paid just over £25 for the GS version............. is that bad : ( lol

As long as you can unlock it then no it wont be bad. If you can unlock it then it will be v.nice :)

I had my old leadtek 6800nu 128mb @ 425/900 (volt mod to 1.4v, loosened ram timings) and unlocked the 4 extra pipelines and vertex shader. So it was an basicly 6800 ultra with 128mb of ram and slightly slower ram speed. Was a big performance increase.

Well its in the Warehosue que now with an ETA of Friday : )

I’ve never actually messed with a Graphics card so probably won’t do anything other than try to unlock it as from what I’ve heard I won’t damage it this way (providing I follow instructions on guru3d anyway)!!

Will I need to buy another fan or will the default one actually work ok considering I’m not gonna OC it?

I think unlocking everything does put a bit more strain on the graphics card, so just make sure you have good air flow in your PC and put the fan to 100% when in 3D with a program like Rivatuner. Then you shud be fine.

I had to have the side pannel of my case off and an extra fan blowing onto the graphics card wen i had mine, but i had crap air flow and was overclocking the hell outa it.

How do I know if my air flow is good enough? It’s a new comp so shouldn’t be bad surely. Is there anyway you can find out by looking at the specs on the auction (linked on page 1) to find out or is it just a case of putting it in and then somehow keeping an eye on the temp?

Am a bit scared of having a good session and damaging something without realising…… bearing in mind I am completely new to pc gaming. Consoles are so much easier!! lol

lol, but building and overclocking PC's is more fun :)

Did u get the "2 Optional Case Fans"?

If you did id put one taking air in the front and one extracting the air out the back (I also have one above my graphics card and pci slots). I think your case has mounts for 120mm fans so thats more air flow and less noise :) so it should be fine with just 2 fans (one in and one out).

Oh and i would monitor the temps of the card with Rivatuner, just incase. Cooler hardware lasts longer :)

I'm not sure about the fans yet. Am expecting the unit to come near the beginning of next week hopefully.

Will post back here when it arrives and let you know.

Now I've just got to be patient............ damn........... I hate waiting!!!
