Could someone recommend me a graphics card for new system?

Just checked over clockers and its been dispatched to arrive tomorrow……. not that I can do anything with it yet though!

I think I’ll start researching unlocking it and putting the necessary drivers and software (rivatuna or something like that anyway!) onto my CD.

What kind of drivers do you recommend? I’m going to be installing xp with sp 2 on the new tower so shall I just download the relevant drivers from the Nvidia site?

another question I’ve just thought of……. I was thinking about partitioning the 320 hard drive into 3 segments, a 100GB for all my downloads (use Newshosting so download s*** loads!) 20 GB for music and 200GB for program files and operating system etc. Will this interfere with gameplay at all or does the partitioning have no effect???

Hope I made sense then!

yeah id just use the lastest official drivers tbh.

Partitioning should not have a negitive effort on performance. It will keep your OS and programs from fragmenting so much and if you have to format you wont lose all your stuff. I have 100gb for OS and Apps, 4gb for page file, and 3x120gb partitions for files.

4gig for pagefile is nonsense. You dont need that much. Leave it set to system, youll find it runs alot better casue your not paging so much to your slow HD.

I dont have a 4gb page file, just a 4gb partition for it :) page file is 3.072gb :) (1.5x2048).

None of what you are saying makes sense......... would I be better of not paying attention and just leaving whatever it is your talking about to the system??

A pagefile is a system file windows uses to transfer anything that cant fit in ram onto the HD. Its like ram on your HD whenever your ram gets filled up. Its alot slower and is usualy proportional to the size of your ram if its set to system.

What hes talking about is he has a seperate 4gig partition for the Windows pagefile. I was saying, having a 4gig pagefile is rediculous becasue i thought he was using the whole partition. He said that its only a dedicated partition for the pagefile itself and his actual pagefile size is 3.072gig.

Hope that helps.

Thanks, does help... kinda! lol

Is it worth me setting up one of these too? If so, how would I go about doing it? Sorry to keep asking questions but I have to start somewhere : )

Thanks again!

Question=good and i love answering them if i know the answer. Making a seperate partition is not neccesary. Hes the only one i know of that does and i dont see exactly where it would help. Just let Windows take care of it for right now until you get better at PCs and know what your doing. Messing up your VM (pagefile) can really screw you over sometimes if your not careful.

Sorted for me then, not partition for a page file! Will let Windows handle it for me.

Thanks for all your help guys. Will post back when I get everything up and running mid next week hopefully.

Thanks again,

Killian

Well my card arrived today........... now I just have to sit around and wait for my tower................. Arrgghhh!!

Hey guys,

I decided to have a look through the packaging of the graphics card and people don't joke when they see the instructions leave alot to be desired were they!!

I know that I need to slot it in and ensure its screwed into place though theres a thick cable with one white adapter on one end and split into 2 white adapters on the other end. There is a slot on the card for one of the adapters but where do the other 2 go? The PSU or the HD? Will probably make more sense when I open it up but like to be sure before I mess. I gather I don't need to use all 3 as it does say the 6800 GT has 2 ports on it so maybe they just use the same wire in them all.....??

When I get the tower I'm going to install the OS and a few other apps before putting the card in. I take it that as theres no card in there by default I won't need to run any updates or download the drivers until the card is actually in there? Or would it be better to have the 6 series drivers (think it93.something) ready on the system??

Am hating this waiting game!!!!

Right well the power adapter is a 6pin PCI-E to 2 x molex plus so plug the spare molex from your PSU into the adapter and stick it in the card.

I would install the OS then install DirectX 9.0c (included in SP2 I think), then install graphics drivers as it makes moving around easier in the OS

I think i finally know what that connector is, but could you tell me does it look like this one: http://www.hitech-solutions.com/images/products/Power_y_splitter.jpg

Thats exactly what it is! So which end goes where or does it not matter providing I leave one of the splits unplugged??

To get this right Kempez, install OS, SP2, Nvidia 6 series drivers, any other software I want and then shut down, install graphics card whilst keeping my hand on the casing so I'm grounded.............. does that sound about right?
