Could someone recommend me a graphics card for new system?

Hey all,

I'm sure you get asked this question time after time and I assure you I have done some of my own research before posting here! I hope that puts me in good stead!

:)

Anyway, on to my query. I've just ordered the unit below from ebay:

Now this is my first new pc in the last 6 years and when I started looking into its graphics capabilites I found out this Unichrome Pro 3d rubbish is erm.... rubbish...... and not a graphics card at all!

Now I don't want to be spending too much money as have already forked out almost £400 for this. I know I can't buy some cheap card and hope it'll work so wondered if somebody could suggest something that would be a compliment to the above setup? I'd like it so I can play recentish games and possible even news ones such as S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

Would be willing to pay around the £50 price mark though don't want to go much more higher? Is that even gonna be possible? Wouldn't mind buying used if I could find the buggers online!

Could anybody make a suggestion? I know it needs to be "8x AGP" as that's the only slot on the motherboard but I don't understand a word of what I've read I'm a console gamer....... please don't hurt me

Can`t argue with that, if u can get a decent 7600GT for £50 (I`d figure closer to £80-£100) I`d snap it up.

It does play well, GRAW x1080 with all the settings it`s allowed to have - memory restricts texture depth, and the AA isn`t gonna go much further than x2. But it does look good.

Of course it aint no 8800, but for £50-£100 on agp.. pretty damn good.
 
I’ve just googled the 7600GY and the £90 mark seems to be the cheapest I can find : (

I just found a Sapphire Radeon 9550 256MB card for just over £45…. is that going to be any good? I’m not looking for amazing graphics but do want something that will let me play recent games and possible a few ones due to come out. Medium quality would be more than enough for me I think….

Will keep looking but if you could let me know your thoughts then that would be great.

just had a look on the STALKER site to see requirements and it said the 6800 would work fine. Anyone know if that’s any good?

I’m not trying to be stingy with my money but I play console games a lot and just want to have a taste of pc gaming without rushing in. One day I may go for a card worth a few hundred quid but at the minute I just want something that’s going to work decently.
 
nah youd be better off with a 7600 , thats the cheapest i suggest you go , then there is 7300 ^^ thats cheap sh1t
 
a 6800 is a great card though getting old it will run stalker though not on full graphics

but 7600 is an equaly good choice an it is a later card

:rollingla. The rest of the spec for that system is pretty good so it would be your worth spending a bit extra on the graphics card. I know it may sound bad, but buying a radeon 9550 will not compliment that PC and games will be crap!

As the main reason you are buying this rig is for gaming, you should invest in a decent card and you won't be sorry! Make sure you get a decent 6800GT with 256 ram and you should be ok to run at medium settings.

What monitor do you have?
 
Not too sure… I’m just carrying my old one over. Its quite a big screen size and is one of the old fat ones that make flat screens look amazing! lol

That’s one of the reasons I’m not looking for amazing graphics, my monitor wouldn’t display them too good anyway. I’ve got a few of the old thief games that I want to play too so 6800GT sounds best bet so far. How much should I expect to pay for a decent one of those??
 
I know, I googled it and the prices I was getting was more than the 7600!!

Do you have any recommended sites to buy from?

I take it that spec would work well with the other specs of my system??

I've just checked the device manager in my current comp and it turns out theres an GeForce4MX 440 with AGP in here............ is that going to add anything at all if I put it in the new one or would I be better off without one at all???
