Corsair Obsidian 800D Watercooled | Intern or Extern???

thanks diablo the point of buying a second 5870 someday instead of spending money in that high performance cpu has convinced me absolutely. i ordered a 920 and so all i have to do is wait for the mainboard to finally get into the stores.

for now i will charge my camera batteries, tidy up a bit and make space for all these boxes...

good evening mates,

so far i have recieved all my hardware excepting the rampage iii extreme wich is not avalible in the stores yet. it is already payed and announced on the asus webpage as you might know.

i have begun to put some parts together and even mounted some in the 800D.

because of all your immense support i would like to show you some pictures of the project as i have promised...

by the way, where would you put the silicon mounts? between rad and fans or between the case and the fans? wich means, is it more important to seal the airflow or to decouple the rad/fan mount? the fans are mounted "sucking" (is that the right way to express it?).

Dude you really should test ALL parts on air before fitting water blocks....

Ive seen many people fit them first, then the card doesnt work and they have to dismantle their loop. Worst case with no waranty because of the water block.

Stop getting over excited and work on the case and wait for the mobo.

Good tip ttl. Also is it me, or is there way to much thermal paste on each part? It looks as if it would just spill over the side when you mount the heatsink...

thanks for the advice tom. i tested the gpu in my other machine and it run flawless.

steve-o i actually removed all the paste and did it again with pads, except the gpu.

according to the fans on top of the radiator, where would you put the silicon mounts? between rad and fans or between the case and the fans? wich means, is it more important to seal the airflow or to decouple the rad/fan mount? the fans are mounted "sucking" (is that the right way to express it?).

ok dudes, the project is going on and hopefully the board is coming this weekend. if it does i think the computer will be finished next week with all stuff (benching, tempsets etc.).

here are some new pictures...

the back fan and the one in the bottom have been changed to noiseblocker pk3's which provide much better air support when needed because of 1700rpm are possible.

i have already sleeved the yellow cable and the white ones will follow later.

at first i want to take a look at the temperatures, but i can imagine, that a triple rad is a bit underdimensioned for 5870 crossfire + i7 920 overclocked. there is the possibility to add another 140 radiator at the back of the case. we'll see...

cheers dudes!

A 360 is plenty for one 5870 and a 920 fella.

I wont comment on the case. Im getting board of my own record now. Ill just quietly shake my head.

@AMDFTW - thanks! i will try hard.

@tom - i know i know. as i wrote in my first post i bought it first and read your rewiev afterwards. but i like the look a lot. its definitely the most beautiful case i have ever had but there's no accounting for taste.

it's too expensive, it definitely has it's dark sides, but i want it!

mission accomplished!

now one month passed, since the motherboard arrived and i was able to finish the work. i went through some difficulties, but no serious ones.

after testing the machine on aircooling...

_MG_6891.jpg

everything went well but of cause overclocking was very limited. so i decided to lap the cpu straightaway...

_MG_6910.jpg

_MG_6915.jpg

and put everything together. because of the long planning, a lot of reading and not at least the help of this forum, it went like playing with lego.

it was a pitty, that the watercooler for the asus 5870 v2 did not fit. today it is released at the homepage of ek-waterblocks. i am looking forward to get thisone to include the second gpu.

here you can see the system together with the aircooled 5870...

_MG_6953.jpg

_MG_6949.jpg

at present, the system is running at 4.35ghz and 1654mhz ram very stable. cpu voltage is at 1.41v and the pll 1.8v. ram is standard 1.65.

the cinebench 11.5 score was 7.52

3d mark vantage scored a bit above 29000 with slightly overclocked gpu.

finally i am very happy with the system and thanks to you, i am kind of "infected" and already planning to add the ek waterblocks fullcover mb-cooler and adding a 140 rad in the bottom of the case.

cheers dudes and thanks for reading!

Awesome. I love that case. If I could have any of three cases with money being no object that would be one of them. Also the Temjin or a Zalman Z series. Or that ridiculous Lian Li that looks like the empire state building. God that thing is SICK.
