My bro is buying a latop, around 1500 max. We were lookin at this

asus laptop. Its quite small (A4) size, and looks pretty dave hot. I hate sony, and most of the convential ones are pretty boring, is there any where else i should be looking. (alienware looked cool but a bit pricey.)

Mate what does your bro want out of the laptop? Will it be his primary computer? If so games would struggle and that size screen could become tedious.

I personally believe laptops should be small like that and remain portable but I know a lot of people who buy them to replace their desktop machines.

I bought a Rock Xtreme Ti a few weeks back. Its insane.

3.6 P4

1GB 4200 memory

2 x 60GB 7200rpm drives in RAID (striped array)

256MB X800 Mobility (pci-e)

17" X-Glass screen

intergrated 7.1 High-Definition Audio, intergrated webcam

54G Wireless, Bluetooth

Its 5kg and batter lasts about an hour tops! :D

Surely if you can't take it anywhere because it weighs a ton and thye battery lasts 5 mins you may as well buy a desktop?

Its quite nice to have the power of a desktop in something you can just throw in a bag and take to a mates or home from uni though.

Yesterday I bought my mrs a lappy its a HP NC4000 its an A4 lappy I was looking at the asus but £1300 for that one and the one I got her was only £530 its spec is:

  • Intel Pentium M 1.5 GHz Processor
  • 256 MB PC2100 DDR Memory
  • 30 Gigabyte Hard Drive
  • 12.1" XGA TFT Display and ATI Radeon Mobility Graphics with 32MB/64MB Memory
  • Integrated AC'97 Audio
  • v.92 56Kbps Modem, Gigabit Ethernet and Optional 802.11b/g or a/b/g Wireless

  • Windows XP Pro Operating System
The wireless card wasn't included either but got a free bag and extended 3 year warranty

Can someone actually explain to me the idea of a DTR? I get the concept, i just dont see why, if you want a small good looking machine for a desk then a shuttle and LCD is great, so why get a laptop which limits your upgrades and power?

Im also looking for a laptop, but have set the limits that is has to weigh less than 3KG, have a battery life over 2 hours, and play games reasonably.

Thats basically what I was getting at.

Cool, great input cheers.

main uses for laptop will be a bit of photoshopping and some avid. So i guess its got to be pentium only, under 2.5 kg, 512 meg min.

I was looking at the alienware ones.... nice but a bit pricey, any one got exp with the asus ones? They look really cool and are spec'd just right. Im adverse to anything sony / apple.

Although ive nothing against the work laptops (HP, compaq etc) and they run linux a treat, (I got my gran an nc6000 with suse preinstalled :) ,) they are normally pretty ugly. I liked the shinyness off the asus ones..
