Hi,

Just wondered if anyone has had experience of these cards. Following the glowing review on here I decided to get one for myself.

This card won’t even do a mild over clock I can’t even get it to 1050 on the core with 1.2v just crashes to a black screen.

Do you think the card is busted or am I doing something wrong.

Should I return and get another one or a different card altogether. I would even make up the difference and get a 7970 I think

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Pat

What are you using to overclock?
Afterburner?

You could just be unlucky with the silicone lottery.

Also, what stress test are you using?

I take it you've unlocked voltage control in the options?

Don't use Kombustor btw - it can overvolt GPUs and kill them.

What's the max temp it's getting to?

Hi James,

Yeah unlocked voltage. Gets to about 65c and crashes. I can tell when it is going to crash as the fans will spin up.

Try locking the fans to 100% while testing. It could be crashing due to temps (unlikely, but possible)

What drivers are you using?

Still worth putting the fans up to test.

I'm not sure about it being a dodgey card...
You may have been unlucky for the silicone lottery but that isn't technically a fault with the card, and it definitely won't be honoured under warranty.

I can still return it regardless as I only received it yesterday.

Do u think i should get a replacement or another card all together.

I don't know.

I don't agree with people returning components like that.
It isn't broken, it works perfectly fine...
It just doesn't overclock as well as you'd like.

Hence why it's called the silicone lottery...
You can't not win in the national lottery then decide you want your money for the ticket back :p

My 670 doesn't overclock particularly well - just something you live with...

I can see your point, however if you are not entirely happy with a purchase you should be entitled to return it. That is the reason for a 7 day grace period.

Hi

no I have not needed to edit the .cfg in Afterburner before. What does this do?

That may be your problem then, to unlock the overclocking features fully you need to unlock them by editing the .cfg file.

Go to the MSI Afterburner install folder, usually C:\Program Files (x86)\MSI Afterburner and look for a .cfg file.

Open it with notepad and scroll down to the bottom, where it says

"UnofficialOverclockingEULA"

You need to add the following text on the right

I confirm that I am aware of unofficial overclocking limitations and fully understand that MSI will not provide me any support on it

And where it says

"UnofficialOverclockingMode"

Replace the 0 to a 2

When you have done that press ctrl+s to save the changes. If it you get a message "access denied" or something like that, download this

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/wind...ership-to-explorer-right-click-menu-in-vista/

Once take ownership is installed you need to right click on the .cfg file and you will see an option to take ownership, click that and you will then be able to save the changes.

Hi thanks for the info.

Wont this just allow you to clock higher? I cant even get 1050 on the core with a 1.2v.

From what I have read about other 7950's even bad ones can reach 1050 on the core.

It allows more power control and changes a few other things, alternatively you could try Saphire Trixx which works with any brand not just Saphire. I like Trixx better than AB because it's a lot less hassle and you don't need to edit anything to get it to work, also I seem to get better results with it.

https://www.sapphireselectclub.com/ssc/TriXX/TriXX.aspx

Most 7950s clock past 1050 though, you could have a bad one but I wouldn't have thought one would bad enough not to even get 1050.

1.2v for 1050 is way to high as well, around 1.150v plus or minus a bit either way should be enough for 1050. My Asus 7950 does 1150 on 1.193v so 1.2v is defiantly way to high for 1050.

Also, if you are adjusting the Memory, try leaving that at stock and concentrate on the core first, once you have that stable then adjust the memory clock.

Try editing the .cfg for AB, if you still get bad results give Trixx a go and see how you get on.

This doesn't look right. Both my 7950s run 1060 at stock voltage. I think you have rushed into the overclocking too heavily. GPUs are very sensitive to voltage changes and you are better off setting a lower voltage and slowly increasing the mhz. Once the card fails some stress tests add a tiny bit of voltage.

If my guess is right then I think you have set 1.2v from the outset and just tried to clock as high as you can straight away?

If I were you I would pull back the volts to stock and see how high you get. I'd expect 1000-1050 at stock volts. Then add 20MHz to the core and 0.01v each time it fails a test.

You'd probably get a troll face sent back if you sent this for replacement. And they would just send you the same card back with a bill for postage.
Everyone dreams of a cherry picked component. I got it with my Q9550 years back, no such luck these days though.
Remember vendors will sometimes send out silicone lottery worthy components for reviews.
