cheap way to transfer files/settings from one pc to another??

not sure if i posted this in the right place or not but here goes...

when my new rig is built i will need to hook it up to my old one so i can transfer all the stuff over

i was thinking of an rj45 cable but i would have to buy a pci adapter as my current pc doesnt have a ethernet port  but i would rather not have to buy something ile only probly use once even tho its cheap (what can i say ime cheap :rotfl: )

but is this the cheapest decent way of doing it or is there anything else?

and how long roughly would it take to transfer about 12gb of stuff and the settings by an rj45 setup?

any help appreciated,thanks in advance ;) .

ok im missing something... what is wrong with just hooking them up via a router... i dont know the speed but i know its damn fast... i usually just use my second computer to download things.. then send them over to my big pc... if you want... i will time the transfer of a file right now...

ok transferring a file from one pc to another.... with xnote stopwatch it was approximately 4:31secs to transfer the ubuntu 5.04 install cd iso rar which was 586 megs.. or 615,307,264 bytes...(615,309,312 on disc wtf!)... so someone do the math... ill post if i can figure out the math before yall do....and the download stayed at 2.3-2.4 megs dropping 2.0 for about 30 secs when i was closing apps ont eh sending pc...

EDIT: ok im stupid what math is there... thats the avg speed... and the time it took and the file size... so yea i know for me thats the answer for the cheapest method... it may even be slowed by being on the net... i dont know if SMB over a local network bypasses the modem fully... lets hope not because i would like to think that there is a way to transfer a wee bit faster... but yea if you wanted more speed... you would probably want to go the usb route or something else straight thru....

EDIT2: Perhaps just putting the drive in after the pc is set up and transferring that way? as far as teh settings go.. windows xp has a files/settings (or just settings) transfer wizard that shows up when you install windows... in the start bar... also can be found via searching the help and support center... i believe it can transfer over teh network... or it puts the settings on a disk... im not sure how many options it has... but for settings... it should be simple.... cheers :beerchug:

EDIT3: Ya I see what i missed... no ethernet port... wth man... what kinda pc doesnt have one fo thoe these days :)... the cards are very very cheap though if you have a frys or something close by... 5-20$ id presume.... you can easily return it after... although you may want to make that pc a server b****

i dont have broadband so i dont have a router...

looks like ile just buy the pci card and an rj45 cable then or maybe one of those usb cables:rolleyes:

what sort of transfer rate does rj45 cable have?

Whats wrong with the good old plug in the old hard drive as a slave? c&p, done in about an hour or two max.

I vote either pick up a dirt cheap pci nic from ebuyer and a crossover cable, or as ham said, just stick the hard disk in your machine and copy the data over.

yea i sorted this a while ago i jus got a usb ethernet adaptor for the old pc and hooked it up with the new one on lan.

thanks.

My slave drive is NTFS and its fine. As was when I had two NTFS drives with windows installs on them.

It's only when you move it from one computer to another that it really causes problems.

Yes, I tried taking a HD out of an old PC and putting in a newer PC, then booting from the old HD... didn't happen . Eventually I got another HD and installed Windows on that one, then I was able to use the old HD as a slave
