Car photos/discussion thread

some noob questions guys, as none of my friends are really car enthusiasts so I'll just ask you guys :)

So been thinking about changing the airfilter to a cone filter and/or changing the back box and muffler, will this improve performance/improve the grunt of the car (sound wise)?

The A/C doesn't seem to be cooling, the compressor works but the air going in doesn't seem to be as chilly, I was told that I need to refill some gas tank but I better get a second opinion before pulling the trigger?

Cone filters don't tend to make any difference to the performance. They certainly add a fair amount of noise and they can be reused for life provided it doesn't get damaged.

The disadvantages are:

-poorer filtration in the case of cotton gauze
-standard positioning can mean that the air it sucks in is hot from under the bonnet and repositioning it lower runs the risk of it picking up water
-Oiled filters will end up coating the platinum wire in a MAF based car. On MAP based cars this isn't a problem. (MAF is an air mass meter that sits just after the intake, MAP is a air pressure sensor that lives somewhere after the turbo on forced induction cars.)

Changing the backbox is a complete and total waste of time as it yields virtually no gain as the biggest restriction in the exhaust system on pretty much all cars lies pre cat not post cat. Increasing the diameter of the downpipe whilst not the route to noise nirvana is the route to releasing a lot more power and potentially increasing the life of the turbo as exhaust gas temperatures will fall.

Question is do you want mods that actually make the car more powerful or ones that merely make it sound fast?

The air con system has a refrigerant gas that can escape over time. Usual service routine for air con is every two years for a re-gas and de-bug. There should be a valve somewhere under the bonnet and a labell with R134a and some warnings about it being a pressurized system.

Got some new tyres put on yesterday. Chose some Goodyear Eagle F1 assymetric 2's to replace the ageing michelin pilot sport 2's. They seem very good so far, nice and quiet and grippy. The whole car really needs a good clean now.

So just about everyone I know hates the honda element.
Today, I saw this and felt the need to puke in the parking lot.

Yes, those are zerba stripes.

Well this post is not about a car but I guess this fits in here as well.

As spring/summer is coming up, I thought about getting a bike license.
The question is what starting bike to pick. Ofc I'm not gonna pick a 1000ccm bike as my first but I want something that looks kinda sporty and isn't the slowest thing available.
After a bit of research I came across the Kawasaki Ninja 300 (ABS).
296ccm, 174Kg, 29kW/39HP and about 180km/h / 110mph top speed

Reviews and youtube videos say it's a pretty good bike for a beginner.
Just wanted to ask if anyone has experience with that bike and/or some other recommendations.

A bit random......
Anyone here use DVR Cameras (Dash Cams) ?

I'm considering one, as Taxi drivers and Boy/Girl Racers around here are insane

I'm still looking for a kei car :l. I've actually put a request in with an importer for a quote. Not looking forward to seeing how much it costs.

Car of the day

I see your in Germany, what license laws do you have over there ?
I passed my test at 22 so could go straight onto a big bike.

Thats a good choice for a first bike if your buying new.
Or perhaps if the laws allow how about an sv650 ?

Got nice out this weekend. Washed the car with some friends. :D
(they all just so happen to have the same car, well, one guy has a srt jeep)

i would kill to have an area like that to wash/clean my car in!!

We have been lucky. One of the guys employer was cool enough to let us use it for the last year. Sadly, Saturday was the last day because his company sold the building. :(
It was awesome for the winter though. It would be all snowy and crappy outside and we would be inside washing and detailing the cars.

massive problem guys, and as tomorrow is a public holiday it's hard to get any help at all.

My car smelt really bad of diesel last night, today I took the engine cover off and some sort of fitting that goes into the engine seems to be spraying diesel all over the place, any easy/temporary fix until I can see a proper mechanic?

still looking for a proper picture to show you guys....

What you need to do is to not drive your car for a good few hours. The diesel needs to evaporate otherwise it could be a fire hazard. It sounds like an injector has popped out I think.

Not planning on driving it for two days until I can get to my mechanic, here are some pictures I snapped like 10 minutes ago....

The whole engine bay without the engine cover

the point where fuel is spraying from, the exact point is the small knob looking thing at the bottom of the injector, I believe a pipe is supposed to be in there :|

Thats one of the injector seals.
I wouldn't run it though because it will only be on 3.

Take it to your spanner man, when you can.
If its a diesel then it wont catch fire, it has to be highly compressed to go bang (hence why diesels have no spark plugs).

I agree with this!

Thanks guys, this morning a friend came over to check it out, and also called my mechanic to get a second opinion, it seems that the blank cap that seals the last outlet is the culprit, tried removing it with a long nose plier and its split in half, I will go buy another one tomorrow morning and hopefully that will solve the problem :)

Edit: for you petrol heads, is it an easy fix as buying a new blank, i guess its cheap, and removing the old one and re fitting the new one or is it more complex than that, that I can't do it myself?

edit 2: a new £0.50 blank and 5 minutes of work seems to have solved the problem, I am still testing to see if the problem is completely gone or somewhere else is leaking, but I cannot see any more spraying and can barely smell the fuel, the little I can smell is from the left over diesel until it completely evaporates. Thanks guys
